Over time, your chain undergoes wear due to factors such as friction, dirt, and moisture. As the chain wears, it stretches, causing it to no longer mesh correctly with the teeth of the cassette and chainrings. This can lead to a variety of performance issues, such as poor shifting, slipping while under tension, or the chain hopping off of either the cassette or chain ring. Changing your chain before it reaches these points ensures you’ll be getting the most life out of the additional components within your drivetrain!

There are numerous different upgrades than can be made within your drivetrain, but where is the best place to start? One piece of your drivetrain that is considerably in charge of how smooth your ride feels is your cassette. While the derailleur and shifter also play large and important roles in the drivetrain, the cassette is one of the components that can create the most motion.

What do we mean by motion? On all base-model cassettes, a certain amount of gears will be loose off of the end of the driver, thus creating play between the gears while shifting. The benefits of upgrading to models like an X01 (SRAM) or SLX (Shimano) cassette, there are a couple notable advantages. First, these cassettes are either machined or pinned into one solid piece. This means that there is no flex or movement possible as your chain moves from gear to gear. Another added benefit that comes with upgrading to a premium cassette is weight reduction. Being that these cassettes are constructed of only one piece and do not require spaces between rings, or separate lock rings, they weigh in at a respectable amount less than their base-model counterparts. And the higher-end cassettes have some cool colors. 😉
