Recently we posted about a spoke threading tool that we use here at the shop. For many of us this unique tool brought back memories of one of the best bike mechanics Boise has ever had, Brian Grieger. Brian was a bit of a legend around the bike industry but especially so here in Boise.

Brian was a master mechanic and known for the quality of his wheel builds, but for many of us, he was more than a mechanic. For me Brian was a teacher, I met him at Tailwind Cycles on Glenwood and State in the 90's where, as an elementary kid, he gave me the time of day and taught me a about whatever project I was working on at the time. Move forward 10 years to Brian's Pro Bike and he was teaching me his techniques for wheel building, I still use his techniques on every wheel I build 20 years later.

Thanks to a mutual friend of ours, we have one of Brian's Bridgestone aprons hanging around Eastside Cycles complete with Ti Prep and Vizsla hair to remind us that you can be, exceptional, opinionated, kind, professional, educational, and hilarious all at one time.

Brian passed away in 2008 but the skills he passed down and the smiles he created are alive today.

"There's a tool for that"

When it comes to spokes there are 20 - 30 relevant lengths and 2-3 different types of each of these lengths that are needed for wheel builds or repairing wheels on regular basis. When you add in all the odd ball sizes we could easily need 120-160 different types of spokes on hand at anytime to ensure that we can fix your bike without the delay of special ordering them.

Enter the Phil Wood Spoke roller. This tool allows us to cut and stamp factory quality threads ensuring that we have the right spoke at the right length with out the compromise of "making a spoke work" when really it is too long or too short.

This tool is one of our shop favorites both because of how useful it is and because the form and function is incredibly pleasing.

These DT Swiss and Hope hubs are two of the most common hubs that we service, here is a look inside. You will see that the Hope uses a pawl design that interlocks with a drive ring inside the hub shell while the Dt Swiss uses two rings with interlocking teeth.

Rocky Mountain Element - How it started (1996) & how it's going (2025)! The Rocky Mountain Element has long been one of our most exciting bikes here at Eastside as it is equally suited for Boise's steep climbs and fast descents. The newest version continues on that same great path while loosing over 300 grams (aka nearly 3/4 of a pound) from the previous variation.

We work on many different vintages around the shop; like most bike geeks new things excite us but sometimes its the old stuff that is just fun and interesting . This is the Maillard Helicomatic hub made in the early to mid 80's. This modification to the standard freewheel allowed the axle to be supported by the bearings much better but Shimano was already using an early version of the freehub which has reigned supreme to this day.
