Spring is here and so are the hummingbirds! Discover and enjoy there fascinating birds up close by putting up a hummingbird feeder. Here are a few tips to attract and keep these tiny marvels healthy.

Make your own nectar. Use the 1:4 ratio
* One cup water
* 1/4 cup refined white table sugar ( never use honey, molasses, powdered sugar, raw or sugar substitute)
Always use the 1:4 ratio as too much sugar is harmful to their organs. Stir until completely dissolved. Red dye is not necessary as most feeders have enough color to attract them. Store extra sugar water in the refrigerator for up to a week. Make sure to warm to room temperature before offering to avoid cold stunning them.

Keep your hummingbird feeders clean. Unkept feeders can create mold causing Candidiasis, an infection causing the hummingbird’s tongue to swell making it difficult to swallow and death. To clean, simply use soap and hot water, scrub and rinse. Or use one part vinegar and two parts water. Rinse and completely dry before refilling with nectar.

Refill or clean your feeders every two to three days especially during warm weather. Small feeders are best so that nectar is not exposed for long periods of time. Even better to have several small feeders to attract more hummingbirds as they can be territorial.

It’s no doubt that hummingbirds love nectar, if it’s homemade or natural. Colorful tube flowers also attract hummingbirds. Plant flowers such as honeysuckle, salvia, trumpet vine and red canna lilles to name a few. So, make it inviting for these tiny birds with big appetites and enjoy hummingbirds in your backyard all summer.
