It’s the Monument Madness Final Four, a single-elimination tournament to decide which is the best roadside monument in Minnesota!!!

Match 13: Jolly Green Giant (Blue Earth) vs. Hermann the German (New Ulm)

First up: The Jolly Green Giant.

In 1928, the Minnesota Valley Canning Company introduced a caveman mascot, and in 1936, the character was redesigned with a green hue and renamed the “Jolly Green Giant.” The mascot was such a success that in 1950 the company renamed itself “Green Giant.”

In the late 1970s, radio station owner and DJ Paul Hedberg decided that his town of Blue Earth town needed a giant eye-catching monument. He felt the popular mascot was the perfect subject, and he obtained permission from the Green Giant Company to use the likeness.

The fiberglass Jolly Green Giant was unveiled in 1978, stands 55 feet tall, and weighs 8,000 pounds.

Next up: Hermann the German.

In 1840, The Sons of Hermann was founded in New York City to provide assistance to German immigrants. They took their name from the ancient Germanic chieftain Hermann who had defeated three Roman legions at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. The Sons of Hermann grew in size and influence along with the tide of German immigration.

In 1885, the nation's 362 Sons of Hermann lodges committed to construct a monument honoring their heritage in the thoroughly German-American city of New Ulm, MN. Construction began in 1888, and the monument was dedicated in 1897.

The copper-plated iron statue of Hermann stands 27 feet tall atop a 70 foot colonnade and dome, for a total height of 102 feet.

The winner of this battle of Minnesota River Valley giants will compete in the final championship match. Let us know your pick in the comments!
