Why Canon Law Matters to the Episcopal Office.

Canon Law is important to the Episcopal Office because it provides the order, accountability, boundaries, and procedures by which episcopal authority is exercised. A Bishop is not called merely to possess authority, but to steward authority faithfully for the good of the Church.

-It Defines the Sacred Office of the Bishop
The Bishop serves as an overseer and shepherd of God's people:
“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers.” Acts 20:28 KJV

Canon Law helps define what that oversight means in practical ecclesial life, what responsibilities belong to the Bishop, what authority may be exercised, and what obligations accompany the office.

Episcopal authority must always be accompanied by episcopal responsibility.

Uncle Don McClure is no longer with us. My father, Ellis McClure, called yesterday to let me know that Uncle Don passed. He was a Chicago native author, 77, who died in a house fire on White Oak Avenue in Hammond, Indiana amid a cancer battle.

My sister Donna was named after him. What I remember most about Uncle Don was how he laughed hysterically at the cartoons I was watching when I was a little girl. He was an outstanding man with a great personality and would take control of a room when he entered.

I lost contact with that side of the family but remembered what was instilled in me when I was a little girl.

He will be greatly missed.

A 77-year-old accomplished author from Chicago was found dead early Saturday after a house fire in northwest Indiana. His family told ABC7 he lost his longtime partner just a few months ago and was recently diagnosed with cancer.
