In the midst of the Lenten journey, the Church lifts up the Precious and Life-Giving Cross before us.

Placed at the center of Great Lent, the Cross becomes our strength, our comfort, and our victory. Just as a weary traveler rests beneath a tree along the road, so the faithful pause before the Cross to be renewed for the remainder of the fast.

Through the Cross, Christ has trampled down death and opened the path to Resurrection. What once was an instrument of shame has become the throne of glory and the sign of our salvation.

Let us bow down in veneration, taking up our own crosses with faith and humility, remembering the words of the Lord:

“Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 8:34)

On the Second Sunday of Great Lent, the Church commemorates St. Gregory Palamas, the great defender of the Orthodox understanding of prayer, grace, and the experience of God.

St. Gregory taught and defended the truth that through repentance, prayer, and the purification of the heart, humanity may truly participate in the uncreated energies of God. While God’s essence remains beyond comprehension, His divine life and grace are genuinely given to us. This is the light witnessed by the apostles at the Transfiguration of Christ—the same uncreated light experienced by the saints.

For this reason, the Church places his commemoration within Great Lent. His life reminds us that Lent is not merely about external discipline, but about inner transformation—the journey toward theosis, union with God.

Through humility, fasting, repentance, and the Jesus Prayer, the heart becomes illumined by God’s grace.

As St. Gregory Palamas proclaimed: “The Kingdom of God is not far away. It is within you.”

May this Lenten season lead us deeper into prayer, stillness, and the light of Christ.
