St. Lucia of Syracuse (283-304) is most widely celebrated in Scandinavia and in Italy on December 13th. St. Lucy, a virgin martyred under the Diocletian Persecution, is remembered for bringing food and help to Christians hiding in the catacombs. Legend has it that she would wear a wreath of candles on her head to light the way. For generations, families have dressed up one of their daughters (traditionally the oldest daughter) in a white gown with a red sash (to symbolize purity and martyrdom) with a crown of candles to deliver cookies or saffron buns. This is often done in Scandinavian countries with a procession, with other girls dressed in white carrying candles and star boys close behind. In Italy, it is common to eat Arancini on her feast day, a delicious fried ball of risotto rice and cheese.
