August 17-18 1915 in Four of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s Zeppelin airships raid tried to reach London but two turned back with mechanical problems, one bombed Ashford, Kent in the belief it was Woolwich and L10 became the first Navy airship to reach London. L10 was beset by navigational errors, mistaking the reservoirs of the Lea Valley for the Thames and bombing Walthamstow and Leytonstone. Ten people were killed, 48 injured and property damage was estimated at £30,750. Anti-aircraft guns were fired at L10 and a few aircraft took off in pursuit but the Zeppelin suffered no damage. L10 was destroyed a little over two weeks later when it was struck by lightning, caught fire off Cuxhaven and was lost with all hands.

August 17, 1945, in Eric Arthur Blair, who wrote under the pen name George Orwell, published his famous novel, "Animal Farm.". This is a satirical novel that uses animals on a farm to allegorically critique the Soviet Union and totalitarian regimes. The Fairy Story is distributed in the United Kingdom, defeating beginning resistance from distributers who trust it is excessively reproachful of Britain's wartime partner Russia. (A Soviet spy working in the British Ministry of Information likewise defers distribution.)

August 16, 1777 - In During the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Bennington, Vermont, occurred as militiamen from Vermont, aided by Massachusetts troops, wiped out a detachment of 800 German-Hessians sent by British General Burgoyne to seize horses.

August 16, 1777 In American militiamen defeat British forces at the Battle of Bennington near Vermont, during the American Revolutionary The Battle of Bennington was fought. A combined American force under General John Stark, attacked the Hessian column at Hoosick, New York, just across the border from Bennington. It killed or captured virtually the entire Hessian detachment. General John Burgoyne never recovered from this loss and eventually surrendered the remainder of the 6,000-man force at Saratoga, New York, on October 17 of that year.
The battles of Bennington and Saratoga together are recognized as the turning point in the Revolutionary War because they were the first major defeat of a British army. The anniversary of the battle is celebrated in Vermont as a legal holiday.

National Airborne Day is a day designated by the United States Congress to honor the military’s airborne divisions of the Armed Forces. It was created in 2002 by George W. Bush On August 3, 2009 the Senate recognized National Airborne Day with Senate Resolution 235.

August 16 1896 in There’s gold in them thar hills! This is the day that Skookum Jim, Dawson Charlie and George Carmack found gold in Rabbit Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River -- leading to the famous Klondike Gold Rush. George Carmack, along with Jim Mason and Dawson Charlie—both Tagish First Nation members—discovered Yukon gold on Rabbit Creek (later renamed Bonanza Creek), a Klondike River tributary that ran through both Alaskan and Yukon Territory. Little did they know their discovery would spur a massive gold rush.

A 21-gun salute in Hyde Park signaled the birth of Princess Anne.She is the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
