Don't miss this month's blog on the "Southern California Monthly Bird Feeding Guide."

Here's a preview: What’s on your backyard birds’ menu this month? It depends! Just like our own appetites change with the seasons, birds’ nutritional needs shift throughout the year. A cold January morning in Big Bear Lake calls for something very different from a warm July afternoon. Add spring and fall migration, nesting season, and changing natural food supplies to the mix, and keeping your feeders stocked can start to feel a little complicated. And that’s where this guide comes in.

The biggest threat to many of Big Bear's cavity-nesting birds isn't a lack of food—it's a lack of places to nest. Here in Big Bear Lake, we’re fortunate to share our forests, neighborhoods, and mountain landscapes with an incredible variety of birds, including several rare species. From Mountain Chickadees and White-breasted Nuthatches to Western Bluebirds and House Wrens, many species rely on tree cavities to nest and raise their young. An oldie but a goodie. Let's take a look back at one of our favorite posts on the Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

In summer, many shrubs bear fruit that birds find irresistible. Elderberries, serviceberries, blackberries, dogwood berries, mulberries, and currants attract many species of birds, including waxwings, tanagers, robins, warblers, and this Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Plants offer this bounty in exchange for birds’ help in distributing their seeds. And in dispersing pollen, birds, bats, and insects also help to guarantee a new crop of berries!

Summer at Big Bear Lake brings a flurry of activity to hummingbird feeders. You can see a variety of hummers at your feeders, from Anna’s Hummingbirds to Rufous Hummingbirds, which may still be passing through for spring migration. But if you've ever filled a hummingbird feeder only to find it swarmed by bees and wasps a few days later, you're not alone. It's one of the most common challenges backyard bird lovers face, especially during the warm summer months.
