Trust us, we know how hard it can be to feel like we can actually take the time to slow down. But slowing down isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. And next Sunday, June 7, we’re going to practice exactly that together.

Sunday in the Stacks is our monthly restorative morning practice at Book Society. This month, we’ll move through a gentle yin yoga practice together: slow and grounding, with poses held for 3–5 minutes to gently target the connective tissues, joints, and fascia. Yin helps prevent injury while giving the body a real opportunity to rest and recover.

Afterward, linger over mimosas (or NA bubbles) and some extra quiet time in the stacks before you head off into your day.

Spots are limited. Register today at tinyurl.com/SundayInTheStacks

We look forward to slowing down with you next Sunday. 🌿

📚✨ Our first time supporting the Bay Area Book Festival and it was a blast!

We spent today at the Writers’ Workshops at The Brower Center, we got to do what we love most: put great books into people’s hands and connect with an incredible community of writers and readers. So many brilliant authors and more bookish energy than we knew what to do with!

To every author we met and every aspiring writer who stopped by — thank you for making this such a special day. See you next year, 📖

Last night we got fancy. ✨ Whitney Marston Pierce brought the magic to Book Society for an evening straight out of the pages of Pretend to Be Fancy — and it did not disappoint. 🥂

We kicked things off with a pour-your-own Aperol Spritz (straight from the book), broke the ice with Whitney’s Level Up conversation cards, then gathered around the bar for a live charcuterie grazing board styling demo — definitely the first time our bar has been put to use quite like this!

Whitney walked us through cheese pairings, charcuterie bedfellows, a guided four-wine tasting, and the art of sounding confident when you’re describing what’s in your glass. And yes — guests went home with homemade quick pickles they assembled themselves.

The big takeaway: fancy is a feeling, and it’s available to everyone.

Thank you to for so generously supplying the meats for our charcuterie grazing bar. And a huge thanks to for sharing your wit and wisdom (including some truly insider tips on mastering the runway walk and curating the best playlist for your next gathering).

Come grab a copy of her book — it’s a must-have gift for everyone.

Debut Night delivered! ✨ Last night, Kate Crane, , and brought the house down — sharing their inspiring stories about the long roads to publication, what life as a writer actually looks like, and what it feels like to finally be out in the world sharing these books with readers.

And the new house wine from Cellars? A hit! 🥂

Thank you to our three incredible authors for sharing their stories — and to everyone joined us and brought the energy.

Now, barely time to catch our breath — tonight we close early at 5:30pm to get ready for our next event: a hands-on workshop with around her new book Pretend to Be Fancy. It’s going to be a very glam evening.

Back to regular hours tomorrow (Friday) through the weekend — and it’s your last chance to experience May’s book and wine lineup before we pull back the curtain on June next week!

Last night, Book Society’s brand-new Tough & Tannic Book Club had its very first meeting—and it did not disappoint! We dove deep into Walter Mosley’s Gray Dawn, following Easy Rawlins through the smoky glamour and grit of 1970s LA.

Huge thanks to our facilitator Chris Deitch —Oakland local, wine rep, and serious aficionado of 20th-century crime classics—for keeping the conversation as sharp as the prose and the pours as bold as the plot twists.

If you’ve been waiting for a book club with a little more grit and a lot less rosé, this one is for you.

Stay tuned for our next pick.

Local author Eric Scot Tryon dropped by for a visit and a little preview of what’s to come this Tuesday. 📚 Eric joins us for Debut Night, alongside fellow Bay Area authors Kate Crane and Portia Elan, as we celebrate the release of all three of their first novels.

We’ll hear about their journeys to publication, from Kate’s deeply personal investigative memoir to Portia’s genre-bending epic spanning the 1980s to the 26th century (and yes — Homebound was just named the Book of the Month for May 🎉) to Eric’s beautiful exploration of grief and unlikely connection.

And because every debut deserves a proper toast, we’ll also be pouring Book Society’s new house wine, crafted in collaboration with Berkeley’s own Broc Cellars.

First books. First pours. Tuesday night. We’d love to see you there! 🥂

The conversation, the cheese, the wine — last night had it all. 🧀🍷

A Taste of the Land brought together one of the most heartfelt, honest, and genuinely delicious evenings we’ve had at Book Society. We’re so grateful to Tamara Hicks, Andy Naja-Riese, and Rose Nemet for joining us for a really deep conversation about land, legacy, and what it actually takes to build a life around growing and making food in the Bay Area today.

And then we tasted it — poured by Rose, farmstead cheeses from Tamara, and baguettes donated by the wonderful . If that’s not community, we don’t know what is. 🥖

Thank you to our speakers, our guests, and everyone who made the room feel the way it did. And many thanks to , author of the book Surrender, for inspiring this evening and joining us in spirit. Nights like this are exactly why we built this place.

Pretending to be fancy, and doing it very well. ✨

This morning’s Journaling Club gathering had us channeling all the good energy ahead of Pretend to Be Fancy — coming to our Berkeley home on Thursday, May 28th. Think uncomplicated but decidedly delicious brunch nibbles and bubbles, dished up with classy little gold spoons (it’s the little touches), and a hostess with the right earrings to match the moment. 🥂

And then we got to work.

We dug deep with memory mapping — revisiting the past, imagining the future, and pausing to appreciate the space between. It was one of those mornings that left us feeling all the feels.

✍️ Join us back here on Sunday, June 21st for our next journaling club gathering — the third Sunday of the month, as always.

And don’t miss Thursday, May 28th — our Berkeley home is officially the ultimate space to pretend to be fancy in. Link in bio for details.
