Berea College Student Craft Berea College Crafts has been preserving the traditions of the hand-crafted object for 118 years. h

It is impossible to separate the students and their stories from Berea College Crafts. Talented young people, devoted to learning and he traditions of the studio, students continue to display a unique sense of respect for the works produced by their hands. These are the traditions that have shaped the Berea College Crafts program. For more than 120 years, a dedication to craftsmanship, design, and

tradition has guided the work of our students. More than 100 students work ten to fifteen hours per week in the various departments of Student Crafts. From the sales and distribution areas to the studio areas, students produce and market works that maintain strong ties to the elemental nature of the Appalachian region – design excellence, a respect for materials and the honor that comes from the create work of the hand. This provides a rich opportunity to learn and work in a hands-on environment. Additionally, this work promotes an experiential education through active learning in design principles, studio techniques, and business application. The Berea College Crafts program draws attention to the unique history and identity of the college even as it makes important contributions to our educational program, and it continues to serve as a national model for integrating the arts into an active campus community. Educating the head, the heart and the hands is a Berea tradition.

The Intersections Cutting Board.

With lessons learned in Berea College’s women’s and gender studies program in mind, Sharon Ngassa ’21 explored intersectional feminism and the works of Berea’s own bell hooks. She was mindful of Berea’s fifth Great Commitment to the kinship of all people and the sixth to gender equality in her design work.

Based loosely on diagrams Sharon had seen in class depicting intersecting circles of color as a means of representing identity, her charcuterie-board design provides every student maker to customize each board, creating a product as wonderfully unique as the student who made it.

Luke ’27, an engineering, technology and applied design major from Kentucky, is featured assembling frames for storyboard panels for the new Visitor Center. Each year a portion of the work completed in the woodshop stays here on campus. In the next few weeks, we will finish a special run of tables for campus use, and we have spent considerable time this semester developing fixtures for Berea College’s new Visitor Center that will open in mid-July. It is an honor for Craft staff and students alike to see their work placed in service to the College’s mission here on campus.

Keeping the studios running smoothly provides the ideal educational platform for our students to learn the essential skills of problem solving, critical thinking and communication essential to their success after Berea.

Diliara ’26, a computer science major who first joined Student Craft in her first year, discovered a passion for clay. Diliara is not only a creative leader but also a disciplined manager of studio processes. She is pictured supporting the glaze studio and overseeing the firing process. We will be filled with pride as Diliara walks across the commencement stage this May but also a bit sad to say farewell as she enters the world beyond Berea.

Chemical Rob.

Science. By exposing White Oak to ammonium hydroxide, Director of Woodcraft Rob Spiece teaches students the process and dangers of this traditional “fuming” technique popularized as a feature of Arts and Crafts furniture from the early 1900s. For safety and environmental reasons, this technique won’t become a part of our regular production, but our students gain a deeper understanding of their link between their craft and academic studies.
