Our steel tongue drums are founded on the original idea of Dennis Havlena’s 2007 propane tank tongue drum aka. We first discovered these amazing one of a kind instruments in 2009 and since then we have been completely obsessed with
exploring their endless potential to create beautiful sounds. After years of listening and learning and hundreds of trials and errors our handmade steel tongue drums have evolved beyond our expectations. Through endless days and sleepless nights we have gained a higher understanding of the acoustic physics and our celestial relationship with the drum. Our new and improved resonating chamber was carefully calculated and tested over and over again to facilitate a balance of overall waveform oscillations, amplitude and tone quality to invoke a clean rich sound. Because of this our drums are a little shorter then they used to be witch also has its advantage by increasing the body of the drums natural bell like sound frequency putting it farther away from the possibility of creating any undesired overtones (tank noise) especially noticeable in the lower bass notes. Also to counteract this relentless effect we have made our tongues a little smaller and tapered towards the bottom to reduce the amount of Kinetic vibrations being directly transfered into the tank itself. Yet another benefit to the tapered tongue is that the extra weight at the top of the tongue adds to its stored pendulum like energy making it so you don’t have to hit it has hard to achieve the same volume while also still reducing the kinetic energy transferring into the tank. As if that wasn't’t enough, if you were to watch a tongue vibrate in slow motion you would see that not only does the tongue vibrate up and down it also twist from side to side and in this twist there is an angular line of tension called a node where almost nothing happens and behind this node is a sort of weird dead zone that inhibits the free oscillation of the tongue. So by tapering the tongue just the right amount we have added to the good and taken away from the bad in so many ways without any loss of volume. What we have ended up with is a revolutionary steel tongue drum that was born in the heart of a star billions and billions of years ago just waiting for the day of its transformation and to unite us all together in the most wonderful way imaginable, with love and music, The two most powerful and awesome forces in the universe.
