Ask the Expert

I’ve been doing this in Chautauqua County for 34 years.
And one question I get every single spring is: “What do I plant first?”

They’re cool season w**ds — and in Chautauqua County, they hit hard in late May when soil temps climb and the season shifts.

Most homeowners pull them. Then they come back.
Then they pull again.
All summer. 🫠

Here’s the better move:
➡️ Preen.

Apply it now, before germination, and you stop the problem before it starts. It won’t kill what’s already there — but it prevents new w**d seeds from taking root for up to 3 months.

That’s 3 months of not pulling w**ds.

2️⃣ Work in 2–3 inches of COMPOST
