The front door is wide open, the sun is pouring through the windows, the music is on, and the shop is slowly waking back up after a long Maine winter. There’s something about this time of year that makes everything feel possible again, books glowing in the light, people wandering in from the sidewalk, conversations starting between strangers.

I’ve been moving things around, building new sections, bringing in fresh stacks, and letting the store evolve again. Little by little, it’s becoming the place I always hoped it could be.

If you’re downtown today, come wander for a while.

Open till 5.

Sunday.
Rain tapping softly against the windows. The kind of day where time slows down just enough to notice things.

I’ve got the door closed today. No rush. No crowd. Just me, a stack of books, and the quiet work of putting things back where they belong… or maybe where they want to belong.

There’s something about a rainy Sunday in the shop. The way the shelves feel fuller. The way the stories seem to hum a little louder. The way I find myself opening books I didn’t plan to read.

Organizing, shifting, rediscovering.
Remembering why I built this place in the first place. This isn’t just retail. It’s time spent. It’s a life, slowly arranged.

I’ll be here a while today… just me and the books.

Today is one of those soft, rainy Maine days…
A little chillier than yesterday, so the door is closed—but it’s warm inside, and I’ve traded the usual playlist for opera. It feels a bit like stepping into another world when you walk in.

Not a huge batch of new arrivals today, but a few beautiful books quietly made their way onto the shelves, waiting to be found.

Sometimes those are the best days.
Less rush, more wandering.
More time to notice what’s been here all along.

Open 10–5 today. Come in, warm up, and stay awhile.

Today is Friday and it finally feels like we’ve turned a corner.

The sun is out, the air is warm, the rain is gone, and the door is wide open with 1980s music drifting out onto Main Street. I’ve got books out on the sidewalk, the shop is breathing a little easier, and I’ve spent the morning (started at 9:30!) widening aisles and making the space feel better, easier to wander, easier to discover.

And the chalkboard signs are finally here, little markers guiding you through Young Adult, Cookbooks, Memoirs, Travel, Music… all the things you didn’t know you were looking for until you find them.

It’s one of those days where the shop feels alive again.

Open today 10–5. Come wander.

Wednesday at Chase’s Pre-Read Books
69 Main Street, Belfast

The door’s open, the light’s good, and the shelves are full of stories waiting to find their next home. Here’s just a small glimpse of what’s in the shop right now:

– Past Imperfect by Julian Fellowes — A sharp, elegant look at love, class, and secrets among Britain’s elite, where one man revisits the choices that shaped his life.
– The Good German by Joseph Kanon — A moody, post-WWII Berlin thriller where nothing is as it seems and everyone is hiding something.
– War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy — The big one. Love, war, philosophy, and the sweep of human life wrapped into one unforgettable classic.
– A Battle Won by S. Thomas Russell — High-seas naval warfare, strategy, and survival—perfect for anyone who likes their history with cannon fire.
– Three Daughters by Letty Cottin Pogrebin — A moving, intimate story of sisters navigating aging, family, and the ties that hold (and stretch) us.
– Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore — Romance with brains and backbone—an Oxford suffragist takes on love and politics in Victorian England.
– The Neighbor’s Secret by L. Alison Heller — Suburban suspense where a single tragedy unravels a web of hidden lives.

Whether you’re in the mood for history, mystery, romance, or something that lingers a little deeper—there’s a book here waiting for you.

Sunny Sunday at Chase’s Pre-Read Books ☀️📚

The door is wide open, it’s in the mid-60s, and I’ve officially switched to shorts. Today’s stack is all about writing, the kind that teaches you the rules, and the kind that gently reminds you to break them. These books are for anyone who’s ever thought: Maybe I have something to say.

Because writing isn’t just about commas and structure, it’s about paying attention to your own life long enough to understand it. And I’ll share something I don’t always say out loud in the shop.

I’m a writer too. Over the years, I’ve written several books, stories that came from this same instinct I see in so many of you when you pick up titles like these. That quiet curiosity. That pull toward meaning. That feeling that maybe your life, your thoughts, your memories… could become something more.

That’s what these books are about.
Not just writing well, but living closely enough to your own story to tell it. If that’s something you’ve ever felt, even just a little… you’re in the right place. Come in. The door is open. The music’s on. And maybe today is the day you begin.

A beautiful piece of history just landed in the shop…

19th Century Bookbinder’s Press — $400

This antique wooden screw press would have been used in the 1800s to bind books by hand—tightening freshly glued pages and covers together until they dried into the books we still read today. Before machines, before mass production, this is how books were made—slowly, carefully, and with intention.

You can still see the original iron screw and hand-turned press that would have applied steady, even pressure. Turn the bar, lower the plate, and hold everything in place until the binding set. Simple, brilliant, and built to last.

Likely made in New England, where small print shops and binderies were once part of everyday life, this is a rare surviving example—especially in this size and condition. It’s as sculptural as it is functional.

Perfect for collectors, decorators, or anyone who loves the history of books and the beauty of old craftsmanship.

It’s a beautiful, quiet Friday in Belfast… and I’m not quite sure why.

But if you’re out and about, we’ve got you covered.

Just in time for planting season, a fresh stack of gardening books has arrived—with more on the way in the coming weeks. Herbs, bulbs, indoor growing, garden design… everything you need to get your hands in the dirt. 🌱

And beyond the garden?
The shelves are full and waiting:
decorating • travel • biographies • music • memoirs • essays • political theatre • and good old-fashioned fiction

It’s warm inside, the books are stacked high, and there’s always something here you didn’t know you were looking for.

Thursday at Chase’s Pre-Read Books 🌿📚

The rain has passed, the sun is out, and Abby’s windows are glowing—birch trees, fiddleheads, and that quiet Maine magic pulling you right in.

Today’s stack leans into something deeper—stories about the lives we carry, the secrets we keep, and the places that shape us. Mostly fiction… with one nonfiction book I’ve been meaning to read (The Radium Girls might not make it to the shelf before I do).

It’s a beautiful day now, but rain’s coming back tonight.
Feels like the kind of evening that calls for a lamp, a chair, and a book you don’t want to put down.

Come find yours.

Wednesday on Main Street ❄️🌿

It’s cold out here today, but something warm is happening on these windows. The old Epoch lettering is coming down and in its place, something alive is growing.

My friend Abby Freethy, many of you know her as the Northwoods Gourmet Girl, is turning these panes of glass into a quiet piece of Maine. Not just decoration but an invitation. Her work is entirely botanical and organic, rooted in the natural world, and you can feel it in every brushstroke.

She’s painting slender birch trees, their white bark catching the gray light of the street, stretching upward like they’ve always belonged here. Between them, fiddleheads begin to unfurl, those perfect little spirals that feel like the very first breath of spring.

And then there’s the green, soft, layered, alive. The kind of green that reminds you winter doesn’t win. It’s not just a window display. It’s a feeling. It’s a “come inside.” It’s a reminder that something is growing here.

Abby is a true artist, an incredible chef, and one of the kindest souls I know. And if you find yourself standing here thinking I want this on my own windows, you can. She’s available for commissions and would love to bring her botanical, organic designs to your space.

Come see it in progress.

📚 Shopkeeper’s Shelf

I picked up this bookcase on Marketplace and didn’t know where it would go…
turns out, it belongs right at the front door.

These are some of the most beautiful books in the shop—stories I’d press into your hands and say “start here.”

Come take a look.
