I wish this wasn’t a true story.

Police say they’ve traced the source of the small prescription fentanyl vial that a child found in a Halloween trick-or-treat basket. The vial, which sparked concern across southern West Virginia, has now been linked to a local medical facility.
Officials say the facility is fully cooperating with investigators, and that early signs show this was not an intentional act tied to Halloween or any attempt to harm the public. Detectives worked quickly to track the item back to its origin, and Beckley Police commended their team for acting fast and thoroughly.
My HUGE question currently is how the heck did it get there? And I’m hoping we find out soon. Fentanyl is an extremal lethal substance even in small amounts. Terrifying.
The department also cleared up confusion from earlier reports, explaining that law enforcement can’t field test liquid substances like fentanyl. The vial has since been sent to an accredited lab for official testing.
While the situation is still under investigation, police are reminding parents to always check Halloween candy and treats before kids dig in. So far, no injuries have been reported, and authorities don’t believe there’s an ongoing threat.
