…part and parcel, except perhaps to those with a closet carving machine in a secret back room,….90% of the work is in the last 10% of the instrument or part. With the back roughed out, the final graduations— the varying final thicknesses which vary throughout the back, are carved using planes, then scrapers,… and gauged, of course, with thickness calipers. Although there are standard conventional points of reference, the final thicknesses depend on density, hardness, flexibility, “ping”, and most definitely,… ”intuition”,—-which is generally and universally recognized as a maker’s prerogative.

… bone dry,…and alas, in my opinion,—unlike modern Martin guitars, this instrument grade wood is absolutely and exceptionally stable.
