Five years ago, Penny Print Studio & Honest Dog Books pulled together a day-long event to raise awareness about book banning efforts, we thought it would be a one-time deal.

But in the past five years, according to the American Library Association efforts to ban books have only escalated. So, Stand With the Banned has grown as well, this year expanding to three days, June 4-6.

The Gilby Report: Learning to Be A Dog.

Having been raised for two years in a 2x2’ cage with no interactions with humans or other dogs, Gilby is like a newborn. Everything is surprising & shocking & at best, delightful. He loves his ball & he did OK on his first bookstore visit.

He looks to Elton & Matt in the way a younger sibling observes the older kids—with awe & intrigue. Among other things, they’ve taught him to drink from a bowl (vs a laboratory drip bottle).

He isn’t YRZ4 anymore. He’s Gilby & he’s home.

A few weeks ago I talked about the book, Lab Dog by Melanie Kaplan, & about the breaking news story with activists & Ridglan, a breeding & research corporation in southwest Wisconsin with 2K Beagles. Under increasing political & community pressure & money from shelters, Ridglan released 1,500 of the 2,000 dogs.

Named for the young man who went undercover 9 years ago to expose the conditions & abuses at Ridglan, here’s how Gilby spent his first 5 days of freedom —
🐶 he learned to drink from a bowl (instead the drip water bottles in the cages),
🌊 he walked on the beach, listened to the lap of Lake Superior waves,
🐸 heard peepers for the first time (very concerned), 🐕 romped, peed & pooped on the grassy lawn for the fist time ever,
🐶worked up enough courage to walk through the door,
🐶🐶🐶and made friends with Elton & Matt.

Big thank you to & all the people who risked arrest, tear gas, rubber bullets & more to make this happen. We are so in love with this guy. I look forward to sharing lots of updates. He’ll eventually make it to the beach onsite. Taking it slow for now.

Four tough broads to get us through winter. We created One Tough Broad Winter Reading Club to read & discuss books we might not read on our own but were curious about. As usual, the books were incredible the level of discourse high.
