Anglers, we need your help! The Bowfin or “Choupique” (pronounced shoe-pick) is a native species to Louisiana. But, the Northern Snakehead, which is a non-native species, looks a lot like the Bowfin… and the two can be easily confused for one another. The Northern Snakehead is a highly predatory fish that can out compete and prey on our native species – and has the potential to devastate our recreational and commercial fisheries. So, it is important that you are able to distinguish the difference.

Here’s how you can help! If you think you caught a northern snakehead, DO NOT put the fish back into the water. Take a side view photo of the fish (if possible). Kill it, freeze it (double bag) and contact the Aquatic Invasive Species Hotline at (225) 765-3977 or [email protected]. Make sure to note the exact location of the catch. This is helpful to determine species distribution and control/management strategies.

Though we haven’t had any confirmed reports of the Northern Snakehead in Louisiana, Mississippi has -- so we want to keep close tabs on any that get spotted here.
