"One wintry day I made a snow, very round and tall. The next day when I saw him, he was not the same at all! His hat had slipped, his arms drooped down, he really looked a fright - it made me start to wonder: What DO snowmen do at night?" - "Snowmen at Night" by Caralyn Bueher.

I love this book and read it numerous times to young Baraboo Cocoa Crawl-ers last Saturday. (I even had one young cocoa drinker read it to me!)

Hey gang,

The window of opportunity to become a candidate for local office in the spring election is closing soon, but there's still time to get your name on the ballot! Nomination papers are due by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6. In the City of Baraboo, alderpersons for districts 1, 4, 7, and 8 will be selected, and you can find a district map here:

You only need 20 signatures to get on the ballot, easily accomplished during Sunday's meaningless Packers/Vikings game.

School board, county board, and village and town positions are also up for grabs, and are also critically important.

If you believe in good government, then you need to put thoughtful people with good judgement in positions of authority. Local officials make important decisions on land use, services, policy, taxes, and a host of other issues. Trusting that "someone else" will do it is not a healthy strategy. Couldn't that someone be you or someone you know?
