Some of this week's service items.

1-3: Overtightened stem. Wrinkled the layers throughout the steerer. Less than ideal.

4: The last time these pulleys will look like this. (Converted to wax system)

5: A failed Hunt. Shocking.

6: Compressionless brake housing has seen some use!

7: Freehub body straight from a Baltimore Salt Box

8: The check valve on my California Air Tools compressor developed a crack somehow. Replacement valve is en route.

9: Is it flexing paint or is it a fine crack at this seatpost key hole? I put silver sharpie in the valley of keyhole to see if I could see a gap by gently spreading the top of the key hole and it appeared fine. Sharpie line to see if it extends over time and reaching out to manufacturer for support.

It's been a crazy busy two weeks but it's been really fun and exciting having some new clients coming through the door.

Working with poor frame tolerance in 1 to 100 easy steps.

Even the Var facing tool struggled with this Colnago.

I shared this in my stories yesterday but the end result is my ultimate brake magic trick.

Image 4: this is the alignment before tightening the caliper.

Image 5: this is the caliper after tightening to 6Nm.

That's how bad the mounting interface is.

Now that it's done I'll be able to sleep tonight.

This is easily the finest carbon frame I have had the pleasure of bringing to life.

The level of precision and care that went into this frame's construction is one of the few bicycle rarities currently worth its asking price.

It's the pursuit of quality that commands the decisions that contribute to a product of this level.

Pair this with a kindred manufacturer in Campagnolo and something magical comes to life.

Did I ever expect to build a personal bike for - the editor in chief at ?

The short answer is no.

The long answer is built on the joint tenures of so many folks that I have encountered throughout my life.

Thank you to for sending Bill my way. I first met Dan when we were messengers back in 2006 and we've loosely stayed in contact since.

Eyewater is the real deal after having some really great discussions with them. I felt immediately connected and heard.

Bikes and community make the world a better place.

The blooming redbuds are a visual reminder of a project I managed and produced this time last year and never posted.

The effort was to revive a cool 650b road bike bought second-hand.

Virginia is where the bike resides but made its way here for a mechanical evaluation which turned into a completely different conversation after seeing how much work the bike needed on top of the condition of the paint.

What if we updated it and made it something a bit more personalized?

I was given a few directives but the most challenging was: “the redbuds are in bloom; can we emulate that?”

Knowing what I know and knowing who I can trust to contribute, the answer was a pretty easy “yes.”

The bike was disassembled, paint stripped, taken to Bishop for inspection, and then off to Bryan Myers for expert finishing.

While all that was occurring, I put together a new sub assembly.

New Campagnolo Chorus 12 group

New White Industries headset and spacers (in purple, duh)

New White Industries hubs (also in purple) for a new wheelset using Velocity Quill rims.

We kept the handlebars, seatpost, and saddle.

When it came together I couldn’t believe my eyes when I could see the spirits of the redbuds blossoms gracing this beautiful bicycle.

Understanding, decoding, and collaborating are assets here at Cutlass; these are just a few ingredients that contribute to these special projects for incredible clients.

This might be a weird post but that’s okay.

This has been my morning routine for the last 5 weeks.

If you count- you’ll see I’ve only written 24 lines.

I don’t write it on weekends. By default they are typically peaceful (I feel very fortunate for that).

I didn’t write it on my birthday, which was on a weekday, because I was in a hurry to get out the door for breakfast with some friends. Yet somehow the practice had proven that it’s working even without writing it down.

Seeking peace within my brain has been a daily practice.
This practice has invited me into spaces within myself that I had forgotten.

There have been mornings where I will start to write Today Will Be My Peaceful Day but suddenly a flash bang of wanting nothing but destruction and chaos stops me. I won’t complete the sentence until I’ve processed the moment because I want to truly understand intention.

This has bled into my business and work mind as well.

I can’t control the chaos of the industry.

But I can control what happens within the walls of my studio.

I get to work on equipment that helps get people through their daily struggles, participate in races, and take them places mentally and physically that keeps them hungry for more.

I can foster priceless relationships.

I can solve real problems.

I can inspire clients, friends, and colleagues.

This message is for my industry friends that are struggling. I know there are a lot of us.

Take some time out of your day to take care of yourself.

The work will still be there.
The industry will still make decisions that don’t make sense.
The clients and customers want you to be well.

And so do I.

Matt got his 765 Gravel RS build today.

I'm honored to take on the responsibility of guiding him on this new era in his riding timeline.

Outfitted with:
Rival E1
cockpit
Rouleur wheels
Rubino 700x34 tube-type tires
custom Cutlass saddle bag

Cutlass has picked up Look to offer another legendary French carbon manufacturer. The brake mounts and BB shell are so dialed from the factory.

Thanks for the experience, Matt!

I'm 42 years old today.

So I'm treating myself to building up this beautiful for

I've been quiet lately on social media. It feels both tone-deaf and kinda pointless with everything going on.

I've also been quite busy both in the shop and working through a lot of personal stuff. I've truly never felt better in my life.

And that's a pretty good birthday gift.

Guess I'll hop on this 2016 trend I've been seeing.

Back then I was still messengering while getting Cutlass up and running in what I jokingly refer to as a "murder room." Let's just say this space had a lot of character.

I built a lot of great wheels in that weird space and it was my first taste of separating "work" from home as a boundary.

Now I'm in a studio that I never imagined for myself or for Cutlass. I have many to thank for getting me here as well as gratitude for maintaining sobriety and grit to make all this happen.

2025 is nearing the end of the road.

It has no doubt been an interesting year for all of us in and out of the bike industry.

Cutlass is completing its second year in the Clipper Mill location. I am still evolving with the growing number of clients that walk into this beautiful iconic space for service, sales, and consultations.

My goal continues to be a resource for meticulous diagnostics and service for your equipment. Sometimes this involves giving bad news with discovering equipment damage; other times I get to give compliments on wearing out tires, drivetrain components, and brake pads. Being a part of you getting the most out of your equipment and getting the miles in is an honor that I don’t take for granted. Your patronage and support is truly appreciated.

This year I made the decision to invest in even more frame finishing tools to better serve you and ensure that your components get the longest service life possible through proper facing, chasing, and preparation. The positive results have been clear when I inspect cranks and bearings after several months, hundreds of hours, and thousands of miles under rigorous use. This has been such a game changer not just for me, but for the benefit of saving money in the long run because everything is properly aligned.

Speaking of investments - the biggest investment I made this year was in myself.
I built up a new bike for the first time in 8 years. I sprung for the updated Time Scylon - a far cry from my three rim brake Bishops, my Velo Orange PolyValent, and a handful of deceased track bikes from my messenger days. A bike of many firsts for me: first carbon frame, first road disc, first electronic groupset, first power meter.
What I didn’t anticipate was the volume of riding I have found myself doing. I rode nearly 2 thousand miles from early June when I built the Time through October/November. I haven’t been this excited to ride since before I was run over in 2012. I’m looking forward to stoking this rekindled fire through the winter and see where it goes.

So what’s in store for 2026? Well, I can’t say a whole lot while I am still in some planning and reflection phases.
