šŸ’™ THE CLOTH SPEAKS šŸ’™
FROM WHITE CLOTH TO INDIGO MAGIC

There is something powerful about watching the process unfold.

First came the preparation…the folding, tying, waxing, wrapping and imagining.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for: hands in the indigo dye pots.

One by one, the women leaned in, dipped their cloth, worked the dye into every fold and crevice, rinsed, opened, examined…and sometimes gasped at what had been revealed.

Because with indigo, you can guide the process…but you can’t control every outcome.

That’s part of the beauty.

Soon the fence and drying racks were transformed into an outdoor gallery, filled with one-of-a-kind creations fluttering in the sun. No two pieces were alike, because no two women brought the same hands, vision, story, or spirit to the cloth.

And then came the reveal.

Smiles.
Pride.
Surprise.
Laughter.
ā€œI made this!ā€

These photographs capture what The Cloth Speaks was really about: not just learning how to dye fabric, but experiencing transformation with our own hands.

Thank you again to every woman who came ready to learn, experiment and create—and to Kibibi Ajanku, who welcomed us into her Indigo Garden and guided us so generously through the magic and history of indigo.

The hands may have been blue…but the hearts were full. šŸ’™

MY TESTIMONY~

This image is the cover of the official gallery lookbook for Abu the Flutemaker: The Unfinished Symphony.

Inside are the exhibiting artists…their bios, photographs and images of their work.

And this time, I am one of them.

I’ve been blessed to have my wearable art featured at the Walters Art Museum during Black History Month and sold for several years in the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall gift shop, where I was told it was their biggest seller. I’ve also participated in some of the largest outdoor art events, Artscape, Afram, Kunta Kinte, etc.

But exhibiting in a formal gallery alongside other amazing artists…with an opening, a closing, and my work and story documented in the exhibition lookbook…was a FIRST.

And at close to 80 years old, I am still having FIRSTS!

Maybe that’s why the title The Unfinished Symphony touches me so deeply.

My symphony isn’t finished either.

There are still notes to play.
Still art to create.
Still rooms to enter.
Still dreams to dream.
Still FIRSTS waiting for me.

So, yes…

I’M STILL PUTTING POINTS ON THE BOARD!

And I have no intention of stopping now. ā¤ļø

What an UNFORGETTABLE weekend! šŸ’™
ā€œThe Cloth Speaksā€ immersive experience was an overwhelming success, and our hearts are still so full. Women traveled from far and wide to join us in the dye garden, and the energy they brought was pure magic. High vibrations, endless laughter, and powerful connections were made.
We didn’t just dye fabric…we established lifelong bonds.

A massive thank you to our incredible facilitator, the phenomenal Kibibi Ajanku. She didn’t just teach us; she imparted the rich knowledge and deep history of natural indigo. After her beautiful demonstration, she invited every woman to get her hands right into the dye pots, transforming raw fiber into living blue art.
Just look at these photos! The garden was transformed into a gallery, with racks and fences full of stunning artwork created through waxing and tying.

Swipe through to see the joy, the process, and the breathtaking final reveals. Hearing each woman share her beautiful creation and reflect on this transformative experience was the perfect ending.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible. We are still vibrating from the joy!
Let your cloth speak.

The Tribe Is My Vibe. ā¤ļø

Today’s Bags Galore Workshop was about so much more than making bags.

We learned new leatherworking skills, celebrated personal victories, supported one another through life’s twists and turns, and laughed until our hearts were full.

Every rivet, every detail, and every finished piece reflects the creativity, resilience, and spirit of the woman who made it.

A special shout-out to Mama Cheryl Hinton, who stepped in as an amazing Teacher’s Assistant today. Next session, it’s your turn to create your own beautiful bag!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday, July 25 at 11:00 a.m. to complete the bags.

Creating. Encouraging. Growing. Together.

The Tribe is my Vibe.
