Maples for Containers & Small Garden Spaces
Not every garden is large, but every garden deserves a showstopper! Here are seven special maples that are perfectly suited for containers, patios, small courtyards, and tight spaces.
Acer palmatum ‘Mikawa yatsubusa’ has leaves that grow closely together and overlap one another like shingles on a roof, producing a dense leaf cover on a sculptural, nearly spherical form. New foliage is light yellow-green with red tips and margins, turning medium green as it matures. In fall, brilliant fiery red and darker red leaves create a dramatic show.
Acer palmatum Ojishi is named for the mythological male lion, this cultivar displays short branches loaded with small, densely packed, rich green leaves. They have a sculptural quality, so when the foliage turns burnt-orange-gold in fall, a lion's head and mane are easy to imagine.
Acer palmatum ‘Rhode Island Red’ is an outstanding dwarf selection. This upright maple boasts very dense, compact branching, yielding a round-to-ovate outline. Mid-size palmate leaves emerge with a bright red spring flush that darkens as the leaves mature. Fall foliage is outstanding orange to red, and in winter, dark red stems add drama to the scene.
Acer x pseudosieboldianum ‘Cascadia’ has finely divided, bright green leaves that unfurl in spring and retain a vibrant color during summer, changing to a stunning yellow-orange in fall. Cascadia has a horizontal growth pattern and is beautiful no matter the season.
Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Red Dragon’ has bright red new growth that turns dark purple-maroon and maintains its rich color through the hot summer months. In fall, flaming scarlet foliage marks the end of the growing season, and the vigorous, compact tree grows slowly into a beautiful, cascading mound.
Acer palmatum ‘Koto Maru’ has small leaves that emerge yellow-green with a touch of amber in spring, maturing to a deeper green by summer. Autumn brings a spectacular finale of bright red, orange, and yellow. Its compact stature makes it ideal for containers on the patio or deck, in the rock garden, or any small garden space.
Acer x pseudosieboldianum ‘Origami’ is part of our Pacific Rim collection. This small maple has a globe-shaped habit and leaves that resemble little paper cranes. In summer, new foliage emerges a fresh shade of limey green, which contrasts beautifully with the darker green of the mature leaves. Fall brings bright oranges and yellows.
