Soundscape was founded in September, 1930 by Lee Dorsey as Park Radio Company at 704 West North Avenue near Park Avenue, just South of Druid Hill Park. Lee had an amateur radio license when he was fourteen and things progressed from that interest. Before 1925 when commercial radios became widely available you had to construct your own communication equipment so Lee was on the leading edge of technology. Since 1930 and as times changed Park Radio moved to various locations in downtown Baltimore on Charles Street then finally in 1960 to 202 W. Fayette Street at the corner of Park Avenue where things continued until the early 1990’s.
In 1969 his sons, John And Ed joined the business. Later brother Richard came into the fold. In 1975 John opened an extension of the original business named as Soundscape where we are now located on Cold Spring Lane. Since then various third-generation Dorsey’s have worked summer and part time and Ed’s son Justin is now a seasoned Soundscape veteran and audiophile. John’s son, Ryan, worked at soundscape for several years until in 2016 he was elected to the Baltimore City Council. Several other Soundscape colleagues specialize in our custom installation department. Eventually the Fayette Street location became an historical memory in the life of the business.
