Here's what's blooming at Bloom Farm, Wildflower Week edition! In our native wildflower bed, the Pale Purple Coneflower is at peak bloom, and the Poppy Mallow is really taking off. This is the third year for the plants in this garden, which we bought from Midwest Natives Nursery.

Last year we attended a regenerative agriculture tour, and became even more committed to taking the best care of our land. In the fall, we planted a cover crop of cereal rye, which sprouted and continued to grow once it warmed up in the spring. It was time to crimp it today, which stops it from finishing the seed but keeps the roots in the soil to decompose. The residue will protect and nourish the soil while keeping weeds down. The last photo is a section that didn't get the cover crop, and you can see the weeds that have sprouted. We are hoping this will drastically reduce our weeding and chemical use, and will keep you updated!

Pumpkin planting is happening soon! To reduce chemical use and nourish the soil, we planted a cover crop of rye late last fall. It's now mature enough to crimp, which Terry did today. The rye residue will continue to keep weeds down (we hope!) and is good for the soil.

My grandparents lived on this farm for over 60 years, and we're lucky enough to still have some of the plants and flowers they planted, including these iris. This is the most blooms I can remember on these purple and white beauties! 💜
