Today we mourn the loss of Sophie Kinsella, the brilliant author whose stories shaped so many of our summers and reading lists. Best known for her beloved “Shopaholic” novels, Sophie gave us laughter, escape, and characters we still carry with us — especially Becky Bloomwood, whose shopping-spree antics and heart made us smile, dream, and occasionally blush with recognition.

To me (and so many others), Sophie Kinsella was more than a novelist: she was a gateway. Her books were often my first “big” reads, filled with humor, hope, relatable chaos, and above all, heart. She made bookish escapes feel like warm summer days, and for that, I’ll be forever grateful.

Sophie Kinsella, the bestselling author of the "Shopaholic" series of novels, has died at age 55, her family announced Wednesday, 18 months after she revealed she had an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Kinsella enjoyed extraordinary success, selling more than 50 million copies of her books in 60 countries, with translations into more than 40 languages.

The English writer first found fame with "The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic," also known as "Confessions of a Shopaholic," published in 2000, following the exploits of journalist Becky Bloomwood, who loved shopping but was terrible with money.
