Effingham farrier takes on Marathon des Sables Sahara desert run to raise funds for local school

Effingham-based farrier and father of three, Marc Lockwood, age 45, is taking part in the legendary Marathon des Sables ultra marathon on 3 April, covering 156 miles run (270km) across the Sahara Desert. After months of training and preparation, he’ll line up alongside 1,500 fellow runners from across the globe for the gruelling six-day run, to raise funds for St Lawrence primary school in Effingham.

Marathon des Sables is renowned as the toughest footrace on earth. In one stage, runners must complete a 62-mile (100km) stage within 48 hours. To add to the difficulty, temperatures can soar to more than 45°C during the day and plummet to 0°C at night, as competitors navigate vast sand dunes, rocky plains and dried riverbeds in the southern Moroccan Sahara. Additional hazards the runners might encounter include Camel spiders, scorpions and desert snakes.

At the end of each exhausting day, Marc will get some well-earned sleep alongside fellow competitors in a Berber tent with no bed, no shower, just a sleeping mat and whatever he can carry on his back.

"It’s a fully self-sufficient race," says Marc. "So I must carry everything I need for the week: sleeping bag, mat, cooking kit, six days of food, clothing and a mandatory medical kit.

"I’m doing this to raise funds for St Lawrence School in Effingham, where my two young sons are pupils. All money raised through the Friends of St Lawrence charity will go directly to the school. I’d be hugely grateful for support, as every donation will help make a real difference to the children at the school."
