The Spring Equinox has just passed. The sunlight carries a warmth akin to something freshly toasted, and the breeze feels as if someone in mid-air is gently shaking out a thin linen shirt—cool and clean. In the afternoons, I occasionally find my way to Figure 8, ordering a steaming cup of cappuccino. The foam sits in the cup like a tiny cloud; I take a sip of that cloud and spread open the pages of Reading Behind Closed Doors.
This is my third time journeying through this book. Fu Yuean, a veteran editor of many years, possesses a prose that holds a certain old-fashioned solidity and gentle warmth. This time, I do not start from the beginning. Instead, I flip to a page at random—it feels like drawing a lot, or perhaps like strolling through an old friend’s garden. With every few steps, I reaffirm his philosophy of life. As I read, I find myself quietly contemplating my own.
It reminds me of a dear friend who deeply admires the works of Dustykid and has collected them all. Reading Dustykid, he says, feels like putting on a new pair of glasses to see the world; landscapes once dulled by repetition suddenly reveal new folds and lusters. Sometimes, encountering a good book is truly like bumping into a kindred soul at a street corner, or perhaps meeting a mentor who is willing to sit down and patiently pat you on the shoulder.
I was moved to hear that the creator of Dustykid is currently fighting a brave battle against cancer. I sincerely hope that the same warmth and strength he has given his readers now flows back to him. May he find peace and a swift recovery.
And you—which book is it that holds a place in your heart?
