Sexy tremolo on 1966 Fender Showman amp. I did an overhaul on this amp last September, but the plate resistor started acting up (snap crackle pop), so I opened her up and installed some fat 1W carbon comp resistors.

This 1936 Epiphone archtop came to me from Baton Rouge, LA. It got a neck reset, heat treatment neck straightening, binding work and some general setup and polishing. It was in great shape for its age and now it plays great!

Had the pleasure of working in these two vintage Gibson amps recently… the larger one is the Minuteman GA-20RVT and the smaller one is the BR-9. Got the tremolo going again on Minuteman and it sounds really nice!

I had the pleasure of working on this rare 5G4 Fender Super amp from 1960. This amp has been well maintained and didn’t need a lot of work. One of the leads in the power supply has broken and has intermittent contact, causing the popping noises when the standby was turned on. It was a real pleasure to test play after the repair was made!

A new bone saddle… compensated for intonation, snug fit and squared bottom. This is your best upgrade for an acoustic guitar with or without a pickup. This is where your tone transfers to the top of the guitar. A loose or bad fitting plastic saddle will compromise this transfer without doubt.

Happy 4th of July folks! I am excited to announce that I am moving myself and my business to Austin, TX in the coming weeks. I’ve got some cool stuff in the works that I will announce as I get settled in. My experiences in New Orleans have made an imprint on me as a guitar tech and musician which I am indebted to beyond words. I will certainly be back to visit and play music as often as I can. Thank you to all who have brought me interesting and challenging projects over the last seven years! I look forward to crossing paths again with all the friends I have made here!

I am also open to having guitars or amps shipped to me in Austin if you are interested. Please DM with any ideas or questions you may have.

Here are some pics from the last couple jobs I did before packing up: 1957 Gibson LG-1 which has been left in an attic for decades. All the back braces had come loose and one needed to be replaced. There was a large crack under the fingerboard which resulted from a shrinking pickguard that needed to be fixed, so the neck had to come off. This was the most stubborn fingerboard extension I ever encountered… I attribute to crystallized hide glue that would NOT respond to heat. Eventually it did submit, but I had to get creative! I then made a new pickguard from a tortoise blank.
Also pictured is a 1968 Fender Super Reverb with the drip-edge silver face. This amp looked brand new, however the filter capacitors were original, leaking and badly in need of being changed. Also re-glued some of the tolex. This amp sounds amazing!

This cool Les Paul Recording model from the 1970’s came in for some setup and fret work this week. It features the low-impedance stacked humbucker pickups that were designed by Les Paul himself. Apparently these weren’t very popular in their time, but it was favored by Les Paul until his death. Those pickups do sounds pretty sweet through my Fender Vibrolux amp!

Fret level, re-crown and polish on this Fender Strat. This is work is pretty much mandatory when the frets are this worn and pitted before it can be properly set up. If not, buzzing and intonation issues will undermine whatever a good setup does to improve the guitar.

Another neck reset on a National Resonator guitar. The National factory put a new neck on this 1930s body some time ago. This guitar was played a lot and over time the neck moved forward (see the gap in the neck heel) which led to very high action. The process involved taking the neck off, correcting the angle and leveling the frets (which were also very worn and pitted). The last photos show it put back together with the new low action. It’s now back in action at its regular New Orleans gigs!
