Gus, a 12.5-foot tall Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton that took paleontologists three years to excavate, received the highest price estimate ever placed on a dinosaur—$20-$30 million, according to auction house Sotheby's.
The t-rex was found by South Dakota cattle rancher Gus Licking, who noticed teeth and small bone fragments on his land for years before realizing much more may be lurking beneath the soil. Licking died just a year into the excavation; the excavation team named the specimen in his honor.
The skeleton is made up of 183 fossil bones representing 82 percent of all of the dinosaur’s bones, including a well preserved skull, furcula (wishbone), and a completely represented pelvis. Its body is roughly 38 feet long, and its skull alone is over four feet long. It goes to auction next month.
