COMPETENT PERSON vs. QUALIFIED PERSON

These roles may sound similar, but they have different responsibilities on the jobsite.
- A Competent Person can identify existing and predictable hazards and has the authority to take prompt corrective action.
- A Qualified Person has the recognized knowledge, training, experience, or credentials needed to perform specialized work or solve specific technical problems.
Both roles play an important part in maintaining a safer workplace. Knowing the difference and knowing who is responsible for what matters.

A tragic reminder that fall hazards can become fatal in seconds.
On July 29, 2026, a contractor miner fell approximately 18 feet through an opening on the fifth floor of the surface portion of the #3 hoist. The miner later died from complications related to the injuries on August 1.

This marks the 19th mining fatality reported in 2026 and the second classified as “Slip or Fall of Person.”

Key reminders for every worksite:
• Guard or cover floor openings and fall hazards.
• Maintain safe access to all working areas.
• Use appropriate fall protection and secure anchorage when exposed to a fall.
• Conduct thorough workplace examinations.
• Train workers to recognize hazards and perform their tasks safely.

Falls are preventable. Identify the hazard. Control the exposure. Protect the worker.
