Founded in 2005, The Book Tavern opened in Downtown Augusta on 8th Street, and less than a year later moved to Broad Street. Eight years of growth saw us bursting at the seams and we were fortunate enough to find space across from our friends, The New Moon Cafe, in the JB Whites Building. This last move has been a tremendous joy as our new space not only accommodates more books but is more open an

d vibrant. We continue to work on expanding the scope of our inventory and community programming and look forward to the years to come as we fulfill all the ways we imagine a bookstore is a vital part of Augusta. While we're still not quite a Tavern, we do carry zero-proof beverages and other non-alcoholic delights which you can purchase cold at the counter. We couldn’t have gotten where we are without tremendous support from people in the community and hope you’ll join our team of readers.

Join us for a radically compassionate evening in celebration of Dr. Tiffany G. Townsend's new release, Weathering the Storm. Townsend will be joined by Dr. Marva Tutt, Ed.D., a fellow Black woman leader in Augusta's DEI space.

The current backlash against DEI, against social justice initiatives is nothing new. We have seen periods of discrimination, systemic inequities and denial of basic rights many times before. And we have survived to fight another day. Townsend applies her clinical psychologist focus to identify obstructive tactics in our daily lives, and offer time-honored counter-strategies to survive--radical hope. Waltzing with Elephants is a deeply personal, unflinching memoir on Rachel Morgan's tumultuous journey through mental illness. She transforms from a sheltered child into a world traveler, finding solace in foreign lands yet battling personal demons and heartbreak. Her stories resonate with courage and resilience, from childhood antics in Russia to teaching abroad in North Macedonia to finding unexpected solace in a Thai motorcycle gang. Through trauma, illness, and personal loss, she discovers strength in therapy, dance, and the unwavering support of loved ones. Waltzing with Elephants is not just a memoir; it's a testament to the endurance of the human spirit and a narrative of finding home and oneself amidst a world in flux.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Rachel Morgan has traveled and lived in many places here in the U.S. and abroad and has lived a lot of life despite it only being about halfway through. She has been an educator, a professional ballroom dancer, and a paralegal by trade, but her passion is writing. She is the author of Waltzing with Elephants, as well as the Substack newsletter, Mental Wellness. Rachel’s 19 years of therapy have lent her a unique perspective and a deep well of personal experience, which shines through her collection of mental health articles and her memoir, too. She's working on a poetry collection and a fantasy novel at the moment. Rachel’s superpower is figuring out how to fix whatever joint has dislocated that day, while her downfall is probably owning too many books. She currently lives in North Augusta, South Carolina, with her life partner. Most days, Rachel can be found hugging trees and playing with her service dog and crazy cat.

ABOUT MOPREME SHAKUR
Mopreme Shakur is a hip hop artist, writer, producer, and activist. A founding member of T.H.U.G. L.I.F.E. and Outlaw Immortalz, he played a crucial role in the production, recording, and release of all of Tupac Shakur's albums, both during his life and posthumously. A crucial keeper of his brother's legacy, he has appeared in and produced/consulted on "Tupac Assassination," "American Gangster," "Who Killed Tupac?", "Hip Hop Evolution," "Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G." and "Dope is Death," which premiered at the prestigious Brooklyn Academy of Music. Mopreme is currently producing a feature documentary about the influence of T.H.U.G. L.I.F.E. in music, popular culture, politics, and beyond; as well as developing a video game and producing a scripted series and three feature films. He lives in Los Angeles, California, and can be found online at ThisThugsLife.com.

ABOUT DENISE TUCKER
Denise Tucker is an arts administrator, creative visionary, cultural advocate, and community builder with more than four decades of experience in the performing and visual arts. Based in Augusta, Georgia, she currently serves as Executive Director of The Greater Augusta Arts Council, where she leads initiatives in public art, artist advocacy, cultural programming, creative placemaking, and community engagement.
Denise is also the co-founder of Humanitree House Juice Joint and Gallery, now The Treehouse, Augusta’s first 100% vegan juice bar and art gallery, created alongside her husband, artist Baruti Tucker. For more than a decade, the space has served as a creative and cultural hub rooted in wellness, art, music, conversation, and community care.
