I know, I know, people love Taylor Swift.
When I was in college I fell in love with the songs by the sweet, curly-haired girl singing about Tim McGraw and young love. I truly liked Taylor Swift’s music up until her Red album came out. It wasn’t even a major choice for me to stop listening, the way her style changed just wasn’t up my alley. I can honestly say that my opinion today, about 12 years later, isn’t colored by a “forever hate” of Taylor Swift…once upon a time, I was a fan.
But today, in 2024, as a mom of a young daughter and a Christian woman, the way I approach what I expose myself and my family to has matured. I do not think Taylor Swift is a good choice for our daughters. When I say “our” I mean daughters of parents raising their children in a Christian home, with traditional Christian values. It’s not that I think we can only listen to religious music, but the content of what we’re listening to should be positive and morally sound.
One of the biggest red flags for me with TS is the fact that she is legitimately worshipped in our country. Personally, I find it disturbing that young children are so enamored with her they lose their minds screaming and sobbing in excitement.
If my daughter was a fan of such a public figure, I would want to make sure the messages they’re putting out show strength of character and sound morals…for us Christian parents, Taylor doesn’t make the cut. I don’t want my daughter hearing her lyrics, or watching her dance provocatively, or listening to her views on political and cultural issues.
