Did you know that English Toffee has a bit of a royal (and rowdy!) history?
While the word "toffee" first appeared in English print back in 1825, this buttery, crunchy treat was actually a massive hit among working-class families long before it made its way into high-society parlors. Early versions were boiled down in giant copper kettles using dark molasses and plenty of butter, creating a cheap, high-energy sweet that people absolutely obsessed over. In fact, it became so popular in the 19th century that Charles Dickens even wrote about "toffee shops" in his stories! Over time, the recipe was perfected with rich brown sugar, luxurious chocolate coatings, and a dusting of nuts—evolving into the sophisticated crunch we love today.
