As schools wind down for the summer, this is a reminder that Bookish maintains a Mutual Aid Pantry at the bookshop. Resources are available to the community any weekday that we’re open, and there’s no registration process.💯

The idea? Individuals and families who are otherwise financially stable often find themselves coming up short when all is said and done. Maybe the gig work has been a bit thin. Or you needed to take a couple of weeks off. Or the corporation restructured and eliminated your position. 🫠

That’s where the pantry comes in. It’s an easily accessible, no judgment spot for needed personal care and household essentials, plus simple medicines and harm reduction supplies. The kind of basics that aren’t covered by an EBT card. The “odds and ends” that nag at the back of the brain as heads hit pillows in working class homes many nights. 😣

This effort launched in September of 2025 ahead of the government shutdown, and your support has kept it going strong for nine months. It’s shopped by locals who have been referred by schools, agencies, and neighbors. It’s often patronized by folks who have historically shopped at Bookish though funds are too tight for books right now. Other times, people come to the bookshop for the Mutual Aid Pantry without ever having been to visit before. It’s all good, and we meet needs where we can. 🤝

Slide through to discover what the Community Mutual Aid Pantry needs most right now. If you have those supplies kicking around unused (or the ability to throw a few in your grocery cart this week on a 2-for-1 special), then we’d be thrilled to receive them and make sure they get into needed hands. 💗

If you need anything we stock, we hope you’ll come by Tuesday through Friday between 12-6pm. Mention that you’re here for the pantry, and a Bookish crew member will supply a bag and a few minutes for you to shop in privacy. Thanks for being our neighbors!

*WE DO NOT STOCK FOOD. However, there is a community-maintained food pantry nearby at located at 468 Moreland Ave. Check our “Community Resources” highlight for food banks throughout ATL.

Looking for something fun to do with your littles this summer? Sign up for Hootie Hoo’s Summer Reading Club. It’s free, and there are prizes! 🦉🏆

No matter how old your wee one is or what they like to read, bring them to the bookshop to pick up a new book! While you’re here, grab a free bookmark to help track your summer reading adventures. Have an adult sign off once you finish and bring the finished bookmark back to the shop to pick out a prize. 🤸🏻‍♀️

Read up to THREE books and get THREE prizes this summer. Kendra had so much fun picking out squishies and articulated animals- the kind of things caregivers often have to say “no” to when navigating checkout counters. Let us celebrate your child’s desire to read with YES’s and fun treats to keep them motivated over the next nine weeks. Plus Chris designed the sweetest little Hootie Hoo bookmarks, too. 📚

The fun starts now and ends Sunday, August 2! 🎉

GEORGIANS: Do you know that has called a special legislative session to redraw our voting maps just like they did a few weeks ago in Tennessee? The aim is to dilute voting power and disenfranchise voters by gerrymandering state voting maps into oblivion. 💥

It’s going to take a massive effort to push back, but we believe Georgia is ready for this fight. We believe that good people across this state will # flood the phone lines, the inboxes, and the streets to make our voices heard. Legislators are being called into session beginning June 17, and NOW is the time to apply pressure. Tell your elected reps to reject racist voter maps and protect voting power. 📢

There are a few quick steps you can take today to get yourself in the loop and put government peeps on notice that you’re paying very, very close attention to what comes next. Swipe through to learn more- please roll up your sleeves and get ready. 💪🏽

Tuesdays are always fun at the bookshop- it’s the day new releases hit the shelves, and we can slide titles you’ve been anxiously awaiting into hot little hands. And while there’s no shortage of good books gliding onto our shelves this week, there is one new release we’re especially excited about this round. The one and only ’s new book is being released out in the big, wide world! 🎉💗📚

You may know Jere Chang as a legendary local educator, LGBTQ+ advocate, or social media powerhouse, but today they can add “published author” to the resume, too. 🎉📚💗

What’s the book about? So glad you asked…

“Becoming the Teacher I Needed by Jere Chang offers a candid roadmap for educators struggling with burnout, disillusionment, and the mounting pressures of modern teaching. Drawing from her two decades in both general and gifted education classrooms, along with her childhood challenges in the classroom, Ms. Chang provides authentic insights into the realities teachers face daily. This isn’t just another motivational book – it’s a practical guide that acknowledges common teaching challenges while empowering educators to rediscover their purpose, prioritize their well-being, and continue making a meaningful impact on students’ lives.”

Bookish holds all educators in high regard, and we’re especially smitten with those working in the public school system. If you’re a teacher, we invite you to come by the shop sometime to say hello and pick up a free 11x17” letterpress poster. We have 20 designs to choose from- from protecting literacy, to honoring teachers and advancing human rights… we’d love to gift you a lil’ something meaningful for your classroom.

And if you need more Ms. Chang in your life (don’t we all?) mark your calendar for June 10 at 6:30. Word on the street is that one of ATL’s most beloved educators will be in the shop signing books. More details and ticket coming tomorrow! 💃🏻

Scroll through to peek more titles available on Bookish’s shelves as of today, and happy pub day to all the authors. 🥂

Mama’s Day is this Sunday, and we know alltoowell that this day will@stir mixed feelings for many. Kendra & I first met right before Mother’s Day in 2023, as my “Annual How To Honor My Mom and Myself Simultaneously” anxiety was approaching a rolling boil. 🥵

As I tenderly shared my complicated maternal relationship with Kendra, she assured me that I was in good company. Over the years, Bookish has become a beacon for people whose formative years were less than fairytale for a variety of reasons. 🏰 This bookshop holds space for a lot of messiness, and goodness knows how nuanced mother/daughter relationships can be.

For those who celebrate the nurturers in life this weekend, Bookish has a selection of sweet gifts for the women folk in your life.

📚 Memoirs, journals, & poetry books
🪞 Mirror decals
👕 Tees & totes created here in ATL
🔑 Wooden key rings
🧦 Bright socks
🌞 Colorful sun catchers
🖼️ Letterpress art prints
☕️ Coffee mugs
👌🏽 Small batch candles, refrigerator magnets for plant lovers, and Mother’s Day cards from regional artists, too.

We always tuck your purchase into bags suitable for giving- each one handscreened by our Simon. Ask for some tisssue and a free gift tag at checkout- one less thing on your plate! 😌

Grateful for feminine energy and the long line of nurturers who taught us how to take good care of poeple. We’re sending good energy and hoping for some time in nature this weekend for you! 🌲🥾❤️

I started my collection of chosen family, my strawberry people*, when I was 19 years old. I was at Florida State absolutely looking to fall in love. Just not with a girl. But there she was. She was everything I was not: an excellent friend. Confident. Thoughtful. She wanted to know so many things about me–and for the first time in my life, I wasn’t scared to tell her. I literally told her allthethings. And she loved me anyway. She broke through the deep shame I carried (I was raised evangelical—its part and parcel of what that brand of religion offers) and made me feel loveable, redeemable. She healed me in so many ways. I wouldn’t be me without having known and loved her.

Betsy and I broke up my first year in grad school. It was messy. We were messy. I was extra messy. And (even though we should have left each other alone for a bit) we remained best friends through it all. Through the arguments. The making up. The genuinely terrible decisions people make in their early twenties. Then, in our thirties, we were bridesmaids in each other’s weddings. She flew into town after my first miscarrage–just to be by my side. We got the tremendous gift of welcoming each other’s babies into the world. There has not been a day where I have really questioned whether or not she loves me. She is my family. And the person I go to when I need steady, calm reassurance. And she does a really great impression of a dog sneezing. Which is not nothing.

I was 28 when I picked my next person for the long haul. We met each other and, again in true le***an fashion, have rarely been apart since then. We drank too much Miller Lite together. We tried to turn over new leaves and drink less together. Got married. Got sober together. Had a kid. He transitioned. I spun out a little bit. We moved to Atlanta. We broke up. Got back together. Opened our marriage. And, ultimately, split up.

But they still have coffee together every morning. How in the hell does that happen? And why? Read more at Kendra’s Substack. ➡️ The link is in our bio!
