Happy birthday Coco Chanel 🖤
The iconic French fashion designer was born on this day in 1883. Chanel grew up in a less-than-luxurious upbringing, with her mother dying at a young age, her father abandoning her, and forcing her to be placed in an orphanage. After a brief career as a cabaret performer, she quickly moved into fashion, where she revolutionized with her innovative designs and liberating styles, starting in 1910 with a millinery shop that promptly moved into clothing. Taking traditionally used menswear fabrics and styles and reinterpreting them into sophisticated yet comfortable clothing for women, setting the tone for fashion in the 1920s.
Mademoiselle Chanel was known for being unmarried, but had a string of wealthy suitors who helped establish her business in the beginning. They introduced her to other wealthy people, European aristocracy, who soon became her close friends and clientele. She quickly moved up in the fashion world to become one of the premier designers of that era. In the early 1930s Hollywood came calling and she ventured into costume design for film. By 1935 Chanel couture was a lucrative business enterprise, employing 4,000 people, with a booming perfume business. Once WWII arrived she quickly shuttered her clothing business and spent the remaining years of the 1940s shrouded in controversy by being romantically involved with a n**i officer, leading to her exile in Switzerland post-war.
Eventually, she made her way back to fashion and Paris leading to her legendary comeback collection in 1954 with the iconic tweed suits, and then her quilted bags in 1955. Chanel had a successful resurgence period onward, and once again became one of the reigning authorities on fashion. Coco Chanel continued designing up until her death in January 1971.
