Pettry Piccolos

Pettry Piccolos Pettry Piccolos offers premium services to the Atlanta Metro Area. In central Atlanta, Pettry Flutes and Piccolos offers nothing less than the best.

Here you will find a supreme blend of innovative technology and time honored tradition. If your flute or piccolo enters my shop, not only will your instrument be restored with supreme precision, but it will also be measured and documented so that I can keep it at its utmost potential time and time again. Blending the knowledge of repairmen and makers alike, it is my mission to not only keep your f

lute or piccolo in pristine condition, but to also investigate, evaluate, and refine minute details overlooked by previous technicians and even perhaps…the maker. Quality is not something that is governed by cost when an instrument comes across my bench. Of course… time is money after all, but let me be concerned about that. An adjustment is either right, or it is wrong. Any other standard is simply unacceptable, and I will guarantee that measure time and time again. Let it be my privilege to offer my skills as a flutist, repairman, machinist, and flutemaker to you.

Today, I’d like to share something I’m quite proud of. As a custom piccolo maker, I travel to my wood suppliers whenever possible to hand-select each piece of wood. This not only allows complete control over my inventory but also means I found something inspiring in the beauty of each piece of wood. That means I have thought your instrument was already beautiful LONG BEFORE production began.

As you can see, I label every piece with the month/year it was purchased, and most pieces age 5-10 years before I take them off the shelf.

When I begin processing them, I sort them by color and quality. The best pieces become bodies, with high color saturation, and nearly perfect grain. The next grade, good color, and beautiful grain become headjoints. Areas cut off from those pieces, or beautiful pieces with diagonal grain become crowns, tenon caps or blocks in custom cases.

Pettry Piccolo headjoints are now available for independent trial and purchase for third-party instruments. Inquire about your trial today!

Earlier this week I had the distinct bittersweet privilege of watching Molly Duggan, my very first Apprentice pack up her bench to go home, and I am SO PROUD of how much she’s learned in the past few months. Not only did she complete her certification as a Pettry Piccolologist, we covered some truly in-depth repair skills while also shoring up some baseline fundamentals. This young lady is based out of Portland Oregon, and I hope she visits again soon!

It’s not often that I agree to a custom headjoint order for a third-party body, but sometimes the stars align! ✨⭐️✨

I’m often asked if I offer a ‘ lip plate’ headjoint design for my piccolos. I started dabbling with the idea during my ‘week off’ after NFA in August, but hadn’t finished one.

Then the Fates intervened and I delivered two samples of a prototype design featuring a lip plate and sterling silver risers.

They were also the first cocuswood headjoints I’ve offered from a source with a vintage supply that’s nearly as old as I am! 😱

I’m not committed to the new design, but I’ll see how the grenadilla sample is received. Regardless, I now have a source for very old cocus.

I’m also playing with some creative options. Wanna take a peek? 🫣 👀

Attending NFA? Stop by my booth #251 to see them in person! And while you’re at it, why not try a headjoint or two? Pettry Piccolo Headjoints are NOW AVAILABLE with sockets compatible with popular favorites such as Brannen, Burkart, Keefe, Powell, and Resona. 😍

Sometimes I’m asked why I developed a low C piccolo instead of a low B like most flutes in the US market. It’s a great question, and one regarding practical mechanics. 🔧

Players often don’t realize that most piccolo bodies are ‘conical’ on the inside, but that’s only half-true. They’re actually more like a lopsided hourglass ⏳.

The interior of the bore has what I call a ‘choke’ in the neighborhood of the right hand D # key, and then it expands again. The placement and shape of this expansion drastically changes tone, timbre, and intonation. 🧐

Simply adding more toneholes at the end wouldn’t work. You have to move the choke further down which then creates a huge mess with intonation in the right hand since the bore now gets a lot smaller before expanding again.

If you extend a conical bore piccolo down to low B you end up needing toneholes that are drastically larger than the inside diameter of the tube. 😵‍💫

So, low C is as low as I go. 🥳

Care to take a Low C piccolo for a spin? You should come to NFA!

It’s been busy around the shop lately! I’ve needed to reduce my hours from about 100hrs/week to about 60hrs/week because I’m just exhausted. A year and a half of that schedule is TOO MUCH! But! A supply shipment arrived today! 💕

Whenever someone places an order, I allocate funds from the deposit to replace wood inventory, and then some extra for future growth. Then, every few orders I place a small-batch order if I can’t go select it myself. I try my best to invest in some new materials whenever I can so I’m able to experiment with them. This order contained some samples for a very rare but popular wood for headjoints.

I don’t expect this wood to be ready to use for a while, but I do agree….

“Pink goes good with Green.” 🤩
