INVENTORS - have you looked at CROWDFUNDING as a way to raise money for your invention?

I have teamed up with my friends at Enventys, one of the nations leading product development firms and a leader in the crowdfunding space! They can show you how it’s possible to raise five figures, six figures and even seven figures! Their success rates are among the best in the business! Check them out!

We loved working with the team and would definitely recommend them for any other projects looking for support during crowdfunding.

If there was an INVENTOR MEMBERSHIP CLUB where you can learn everything from the best people in the industry and it was COMPLETELY FREE, would you join?

I’ve been working on a very robust membership club where inventors can learn everything about the invention process from the idea stage all the way to bringing it to market themselves or through licensing. We will have live Q&A sessions and experts from the industry providing articles and videos, and the course a forum where all inventors can chat amongst themselves with our input!

I thought to make it a certain amount per month, but I feel like doing it for free helps everybody even more!

There’s absolutely no catch or no strings attached. Ultimately if people want to work with me very directly where I do things for them, of course they have that option to do so but everything in the club you can learn is just about everything you need to start your invention journey and beyond!

INVENTORS - a VIDEO is the best way to show off your product to retailers!

A video is worth a thousand words!

Today, capturing the attention of a retail buyer means you have to do it quickly and efficiently. How do you do that? Through a video!

- Make the video SHORT...60 seconds max. BUYERS just don’t have the time or attention span.

- Make sure you explain exactly what your product is and the main benefits and features. GET TO THE POINT FAST!

- You can make high-quality videos right from your phone. Certainly you can invest in more professional videos but either way can work!

INVENTORS- Do RETAILERS pay you upfront for your order?

No...they do not!

When you sell your product to a major retailer, They will not pay you a deposit or pay anything upfront. They work on what’s called NET TERMS such as net 30 days or net 60 days or even net 90 days. This means they will pay you 30, 60, or 90 days after they receive your goods in their warehouse.

Occasionally, If a retailer is very confident in your product, they will do what’s called a DIRECT IMPORT deal where they will wire you the money for your product after it’s been picked up from the factory. This typically happens after you’ve been doing business with them for a while but it can happen the very first time you deal with them.

The bottom line is you need to be prepared to go without getting paid for a month or two or more and so you need to plan accordingly!

What’s the most CHALLENGING part of INVENTING?

For me it was always marketing.

When I ran my product company years ago, I always felt like I made great products and could successfully sell them but getting visibility was always the challenge.

Advertising was expensive and even when you did it didn’t mean that people saw your ads. Retailers love brands and finding a way to grow my brand was always a difficult task but eventually I got there. Between running ads and attending tradeshows and sponsoring events we eventually made headway.

WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE?

INVENTORS - DON’T PERFECT YOUR PRODUCT IDEA...or someone else will get to market FIRST!

Too many inventors spend too much time and money trying to work out every last detail of their product because they feel if they don’t it just won’t sell well or work right.

Now don’t get me wrong...making sure your product performs well and looks good are very important. The last thing you want to do is to hurt your brand or compromise your values.

But...

If you spend forever and a day trying to make sure that everything is PERFECT, someone else will come along with something similar and possibly even better and create the success you’ve been working so hard to potentially enjoy.

Once your product hits the market believe me consumers will let you know very quickly what can be improved and changed and that’s when you come along and make a new updated version that meets the needs and demands of the very people who buy it.

A successful inventor is an EDUCATED INVENTOR!

I’ve learned a lot of things from the thousands of inventors I have worked with and talked to over the years, but the one thing that really stands out is that the inventors that are most successful are the ones that understand the process of inventing and can have their expectations managed.

INVENTING IS EMOTIONAL! When people get emotional they can make poor decisions and worse they can have unrealistic expectations good or bad. When an inventor understands that it’s going to take longer than they think and more money than they planned for and that there will be bumps in the road they settle in and understand that inventing is a business and it takes a lot of work and effort - no matter how great they think their product is!

Knowing the process and the steps provides clarity. It provides comfort. It allows people to move forward with confidence while understanding the risks and rewards of this business!

INVENTORS - should you MANUFACTURE your product in the USA?

Should you make your product in the USA or overseas has been a raging debate for decades in the product business.

When I ran my product company years ago I made everything overseas for a few major reasons - the quality was very good, there were plenty of willing factories to make my products, and the cost was very low. Of course these are just some of the reasons to utilize any factory regardless of where they are at and in my case my products at the time were made in China and Korea. My factories were excellent communicators, were very consistent in putting out a quality product, and the cost to ship my products to my warehouse was low and so I had no reason to consider the United States at the time. Fast forward to today…

The cost to produce products overseas has gone up significantly. The quality is not what it used to be in many instances. We don’t even want to talk about how expensive it is to ship something from China these days! Not to mention all the knock off products that are made by some of these factories and the inability to enforce any intellectual property for the average person when a foreign entity decides to make and sell your products close to their home.

The reality is is that you have to look at your own product and compare costs and shipping and other factors and decide what’s best for you. It’s obvious that overseas factories are great at making the things we love the most like our cars and our phones and our TVs and appliances and clothing and all the things we use on an every day basis. But US factories also are equally skilled.

Many inventors have told me that they want to support the USA by making things here and my response has always been that if you make a product here and it’s 3 or 5 times more costly than making it overseas then you won’t have a successful business and won’t be able to hire people or even keep yourself employed so is that really supporting your local economy or putting a strain on it?

For most inventors it often comes down to the COST and being able to make the product so it’s able to be sold and affordable by the average person. When you invent you are running a business and it’s about making profits and allowing your retail customers to do the same. Ultimately you have to do your research and see where it’s best to manufacture and of course if you can do it here at home in the USA that’s always a nice feeling but you must remember that in order to have a successful business you have to clear a profit so do your homework and then you can decide where is best to manufacture!
