Our present confectionery business began as a hobby that endeavored to sell enough candy each holiday season to cover most of the expenses incurred. Wertheim, was involved in the trade with his brother, David, in the 1920’s and early 1930’s, but left after a disagreement, married and began farming. Over the years a little equipment accumulated and I was captured during the Christmas season each ye

ar to help. Neither my father nor I had any formal knowledge of modern candy making, and as a result relied on a book written in 1908 by a confectioner in a nearby city. It became clear to use that our candies were different, and not just because they tasted better than most… using only what is necessary does not make a candy that keeps well, but it certainly makes one that tastes good! After my father’s death in 1977, we kept making a little candy for our own use, but not as much as before; but as our business of grain farming sickened we decided to change out “hobby” into a business and our business into a hobby. And now as our 4th generation joins in, we are proud to say we still only make candies from the simple ingredients ~ no preservatives, no flavorings, or modern chemistry. We offer you “regular old candy” the way it was always meant to be made.
