Ghana Community Trade Program

Ghana Community Trade Program The GCTP sends UGA students abroad in search of Ghananian textiles, jewelry, and fashion to bring ba So come join us!

Launched in the summer of 2011, the Ghana Community Trade Program ventures to support and share the unique beauty of Ghana with Athens. The mission is to support women entrepreneurs and encourage consumers to "buy local and support women in Africa". This program was started by Emily Blalock in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Interiors at the University of Georgia. The program is made p

ossible by the Interdisciplinary Ghana Study Tour in the School of Social Work. In May 2013, eight students will embark with faculty from UGA to find the most innovative textile designers, weavers, jewelry designers, and fashion designers in Ghana. Our goal is to build relationships with Ghana’s culture-makers and then share their stories and their art with you through our fabulous downtown partnerships. We will be updating our travelogue with pictures and tales from our journey, and of course, details on how you get your hands on the beautiful Ghanaian products coming soon to downtown Athens!

Here is one of the days we spent at the Kumasi Children's Home - painting and refreshing murals and playing with children. I spent most of the day peeling oranges for some of the children - I guess that was a good task for "auntie." UGA students were excellent at painting and playing!

Well we have been back from out 3 weeks in for a month now and it is time for me to upload some photos. We spent a day with our favorite master dressmaker - Gina; the fashion merchandising majors discussed their designs with either Gina or Jonathan (he specializes in men's wear) and left the patternmaking and construction to their very capable hands. We are still waiting for some of the products and as soon as they arrive we will be posting more photos.
