The Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon's board President Sally Snyder recently announced the exciting news that Nathanael (Nathan) Hooper has been appointed by the governing board as YSSO Music Director and Conductor of the Youth Symphony and the Youth Orchestra. He will succeed Cynthia Hutton, who retired at the conclusion of last season after 30 years of extraordinary leadership.

Nathan shared, “I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to work with the students, parents, board, and staff of the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon, as well as community members.” He added that he plans to “continue the spirit of collaboration and commitment to excellence I’ve experienced so far, grow the musicianship of the students, and expand community participation.”

Nathan holds a Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Brigham Young University–Idaho. His principal instrument is the violin.

This season, the YSSO will return to in-person auditions. The required audition excerpts and scales (or scale options) are posted on the YSSO website. Musicians and parents are encouraged to visit the website (www.ysso.org) for audition information or contact the YSSO ([email protected]) for assistance.
