Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Today is the first time the United States Postal Service has lowered the price of a stamp since July 1st 1919. On that date, postage for a first class domestic letter went from 3 cents to 2 cents. Today postage has gone from 49 cents to 47 cents. If this pattern continues by the year 2113 it should go down again.
