Young freshwater tropicals often need slightly higher dissolved oxygen than adults because growing fish have faster metabolism and gill surface area that scales differently with body mass; keeping oxygen a few mg/L higher during juvenile stages speeds growth and reduces deformities, especially in dense rearing or community setups. This is why gentle surface agitation or air-driven sponge filters are more important in tanks with lots of fry than in established adult-only displays. 🐟💨
