The most powerful quote in all 8 episodes of Alien: Earth (which, by the way, is a fun ride and didn’t go at all the way I thought it might).

“Don’t say complicated. That is what powerless people say to make doing nothing okay.”

As if to say describing something as complicated is a resignation, an acceptance of defeat. I was inspired to think about when I hear things described as complicated and how it’s used.

There’s “it’s complicated” and “it’s complicated, but…” and my father always says “everything that comes before the but is negated.” How we talk about things and to ourselves says everything about our orientation to the world.

Choose words carefully and choose careful words.
