We love our Whimsey pieces from the Astral Peacock puzzle! Did you know that Whimsey pieces got their name from the Victorian jigsaw puzzle designers who often cut them on a whim as they cut the puzzles.

John Spilsbury is the cartographer and engraver credited with inventing jigsaw puzzles in the 1760s. As a cartographer (someone who draws maps) he created the first puzzles by attaching a world map to wood and cutting out the countries.

He then distributed his newly created puzzles to be used for educational purposes for the children in his town. What a genius tool! Thanks John Spilsbury, from all the puzzlers around the world!

It's true! What we call Jigsaw Puzzles today were originally called Dissected Puzzles. The special saw that was created to cut puzzles wasn't invented till the 1880's. That saw was called a jigsaw, thus we have Jigsaw Puzzles today! Which sounds better to you, dissected puzzles or jigsaw puzzles?
