We are bottling honey this week. Things may be a little different this year. Jars are much harder to find than they used to be. For right now we’ll just do orders on pints and quarts. That being said, we have lots of honey!

Pints-$10
Quarts-$15

I’ve recently had several people ask me why we named our apiary Miller’s Fork Apiary. Well, honestly, we just didn’t want to do the typical family last name thing. Plus, our last name isn’t the easiest. Lol.

Brent (the beekeeper) said when we first started in 2015 that that’s what he wanted to name it. One of the main water sources for our bees is this creek that runs right in front of our property. Miller’s Fork Creek. We also have bees in Preble County on our friend’s property and oddly enough, the creek that runs through their property is the same creek, Miller’s Fork. So, it only seemed fitting 😊🍯🐝

We went out to the bee yard tonight to see how the hives are wintering. These weird brown spots and dead bees are actually a good sign! This means the bees were venturing out today to use the bathroom and clean out the bees that have died over winter. There were more active hives than we expected. Let’s hope we don’t get any below zero cold snaps before spring 🤞🏻

Some random bee facts for this cold, snowy Wednesday.

Did you know during winter, the bees all clump together towards the middle of the hive, surrounding the queen. At this time, they allow the temperature of the hive to drop to around 81° F on the inside of the cluster to conserve energy. Bees on the outer parts of the cluster, which will usually be around 48° F, then occasionally rotate with the bees on the more crowded inner parts, so that all the bees can keep warm enough to survive. Once the queen starts laying again, the temperature of the inner part of the hive will be raised back up to about 93° F. Once the temperature outside reaches 50° F you’ll start to see bees leaving the hive and looking for nectar.
