Marching toward the impossible. Trying to rebuild something lost and reopen the dream of a community bookshop.

Today family and volunteers have been very busy the last couple of weeks. We’re almost there, we have to pass a mall inspection this week and get past some county issues as well.

The wife does not wish me to post the current video until everything is done. This week we’re sorting CDs, DVDs alphabetically as well as needing to sort romance, and philosophy. Some boxes for US History need to be found, I have all of WWII but I’m missing most of the Civil War. I know it will all work out. I mean there’s well over 12,000 books in the store already, but emptying a bunch of our last storage unit into a truck and we discovered 25 more crates and a gazillion more boxes of product. So we trudge on.

Our volunteers and family have really been a blessing. This really was a much bigger project than I expected. I was talking to my Son in-law today and I told him if I knew the cost of this move, I would still have done it. This store is slowly turning out just the way, I always hoped.

I’ll be at the store Monday night after 5:00PM and other days/evenings this week as well.

We’re a week or two from opening.

Last weekend volunteers showed up and things changed. The young adult and mystery sections got alphabetized by author. As I said to one volunteer and her daughter the section they were working on became truly beautiful. The Literature, Science Fiction, US History, Maryland, and Global History began to be organized.

What still needs help is the organizing of other sections and the placement of books out of our storage bins. We have at least one more truck load to come but the place is starting to materialize out of the confusion and dishevel of the move.

I’m at the store this Saturday from 10:30 to 3:30PM and on Sunday after 5:00PM. Other times I’ll be sleeping, chaperoning a student event, as well as packing stuff at the storage units.

The above are good times for people to stop by and talk to me about employment opportunities. I see us hiring three to four part time employees in the near future. No applications exist yet but they will exist in the future.

Thank you so much to those who have helped us so far. You have been a blessing and given us the great gift of time!

Tubs are still available when I’m at the store like today and Friday from 10:30 to 2:30.

We’re packing a truck on Saturday at 6:00PM at the Pasadena Presitage storage on RT 2. We’ll unload the truck at 8:30PM and be done by 10PM at the back end of Annapolis Mall near Potbelly’s. Volunteers are appreciated.

Or if you’re a mind to, we’re having a day of shelving and alphabetical sorting the books on Monday from 10:30 to 4:30PM. Volunteers will be awarded pizza and gift certificates for future purchases at the Curmudgeon.

On the one hand it seems out of place to ask for volunteers but some have asked and I’m never sure what to say.

The reopening has been physically, mentally, and financially exhausting. But it is a dream to build a unique community bookshop that I would have wanted to go too when “I wore a younger man’s clothes.”

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and the kindness already shown.

It’s a process! We’re emptying another storage unit today, I hope, and moving more furniture later this week. Started the installation of an aquarium yesterday, if anyone knows a semi expert in this send them my way, I’m flying blind on salt water fish but I know kids like them.

Emptied 50 boxes and around forty bins of books yesterday with the amazing help of a friend and my son. I think we’ve put unorganized 20% of the books on shelves. It’s a process, they’ll need to be alphabetically sorted but we are organizing them by category. We’re following a rough map I made that a designer friend is redoing.

All is well, I’m at the store a lot this week with spring break. Stop by if you’re already in the area and I’ll give you the 10cent tour and won’t even charge you a dime.

Toying with the idea of emphasizing the store having more of a museum feel. The couches were delivered yesterday and all I can say is this is not going to be like any bookstore I’ve ever been too.

Thanks for following us on this adventure!

We’ve moved into the phase of emptying boxes and our storage bins of the 11,000+ books. We paid $10 to $12 per storage bin one year ago. We have 240 storage bins that will be empty soon. I want to sell them for $4.00 cash per bin if anyone wants them. Please pass this post along to anyone who can use them. The 35 boxes are going to a church this afternoon. It’s a process.

We’re still a couple of truck loads of material before we’ll be ready to open. No books on the shelves yet.

Between last weekend and today my son and I assembled 92 shelving units. I helped but it was really my son who did the bulk of the lifting, drilling, and blending of five different designs and heights of shelves into one cohesive book wonderland. He’s been a joy to work with and really focused on putting everything in its place.

My wife and I did get to put in suggestions on placement. Such as every book aisle is 48 to 56 inches wide. It’s been fun/hard kind of work and people have been stopping by and telling us about the first time they came to the Curmudgeon. And wishing us the best in this new venue. Many of our conversations have been walks down memory lane.

The store is looking less like a jig saw puzzle everyday. Opening in April at this point but when is still a mystery.

At the time of this writing we’re at 2995 followers on Facebook. I hope everyone will visit when they can.

The store will apparently have couches so stop by and sit for a spell and just chat, it would be lovely.😊
