Keeping supply lines open across the Atlantic became a critical task during World War I. German submarines targeted Allied shipping, while Allied naval forces worked to protect the convoys carrying troops, food, fuel, and materiel. On August 23, 1918, a force of battleships under the command of Rear Adm. Thomas S. Rodgers, USN (USNA Class of 1876), assembled at Bantry Bay, Ireland, as part of the effort to counter enemy raiders and safeguard the vital Atlantic lifeline.

The United States Marine Corps is best known for its role as the nation’s expeditionary fighting force, and its record in the Pacific during World War II is legendary. Less well known is that the Marines also have their own aviation arm. On August 20, 1942, the es**rt carrier USS Long Island delivered Marine Corps fighters and dive bombers to Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. Their arrival provided critical air support during the campaign and helped secure a foothold for Allied forces in the Solomon Islands.

Long before the United States became a global military power, the USS Constitution helped establish the young nation’s naval reputation. On August 19, 1812, during the War of 1812, the American frigate defeated HMS Guerriere off the coast of Nova Scotia. As British cannon fire appeared to bounce off Constitution’s sturdy hull, one sailor reportedly exclaimed that her sides must be made of iron. From that moment came the legendary nickname: “Old Ironsides.”

Winston Churchill famously referred to battleships as “castles of steel,” and for decades they were the most powerful warships afloat.
The first battleship commissioned by the U.S. Navy was USS Texas, which entered service on August 15, 1895, under the command of Capt. Henry Glass. USS Texas marked a major step in the Navy’s transformation into a modern, steel-hulled fighting force.

In naval aviation today, the idea of an aircraft launching explosive ordnance is taken for granted. But it had to begin somewhere. On August 14, 1917, Lt. Edward O. McDonnell, USN (USNA Class of 1912), who later received the Medal of Honor, launched a torpedo from an aircraft off the coast of New York. It was a milestone moment in naval aviation and an early glimpse of how aircraft would transform warfare at sea.
