On June 6, 1944, D-Day, Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy. While landings at Gold, Sword, Juno, and Utah Beaches advanced, Omaha Beach proved especially deadly. U.S. Navy destroyers, including USS McCook and USS Carmick, moved dangerously close to shore and delivered direct fire against German positions, helping troops advance inland.
