On June 6, 1944, D-Day, Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy. While landings at Gold, Sword, Juno, and Utah Beaches advanced, Omaha Beach proved especially deadly. U.S. Navy destroyers, including USS McCook and USS Carmick, moved dangerously close to shore and delivered direct fire against German positions, helping troops advance inland.

As a large Japanese fleet approached Midway, it aimed to seize the island and draw out the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Thanks to codebreaking efforts, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (Class of 1905) anticipated the attack and positioned U.S. carriers northeast of Midway at a location known as “Point Luck.” On June 4, 1942, aircraft from those carriers struck and sank four Japanese carriers, turning the tide of the war in the Pacific.
