This Black History Month, we're honoring Elizabeth Keckley (1818–1907) who rose from enslavement to become a prominent dressmaker in Washington, D.C., best known for designing gowns for First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. A skilled designer with a thriving business, she also founded the Contraband Relief Organization in 1862 to support newly freed Black Americans during the Civil War. In 1868, she published her autobiography Behind the Scenes, documenting her life in slavery and her years in the White House, cementing her legacy as a designer, activist, and author.

This January, our founder, Dr. Madeline Walker Miller, joined Donna Givens Davidson, President & CEO of Eastside Community Network, and Karina Yang, a University of Michigan undergraduate in the Program in the Environment (PitE), for a thoughtful intergenerational conversation on Perspectives on Environmental Justice & Resilience, held in honor of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hosted by the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) and guided by moderator Nayomi Cawthorne, MS/MPH candidate, the program offered a refreshing moment in today’s climate. Each generation showed up with openness, mutual respect, and a willingness to give the other its flowers, honoring lived experience and emerging vision alike as essential to environmental justice and resilience. 🌱✨
