Rickie Lee Curtland, known affectionately as Woody, passed away on July 2, 2024, in Ft Wayne, Indiana at the age of 70. Born on August 27, 1953, in Angola, Indiana. Woody lived a life of creativity, kindness, and a passion for various arts.
Woody is survived by his devoted wife and soulmate of 50 years, Sandra Austin, who was always by his side, through thick and thin, right till the end. They were blessed with the magic of a lifelong loving partnership.
His extensive family includes five sisters; Irene Wisel, Louise Porter, Viola Friend, Vera Delancey, Lorraine Hoard and one brother, Ray Curtland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Elvester Curtland and a brother Floyd Curtland. He was a cherished uncle to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. The number of friends Woody had is astounding, he was loved by so many people.
Woody was a man of many talents and interests. He spent his time as a gardener, carpenter, mechanic, beekeeper, fisherman, historic reenactor, among many other roles. He was particularly noted for his skills in making rustic willow furniture, gourd drums and musical instruments, jewelry, and leather wares. He and Sandy had a shop in Angola for 17 years and though they had no children of their own they "raised" many local kids.
Woody's love for music was profound; he taped live shows at festivals and was renowned for performing psychedelic live liquid oil light shows as "The Blue Rhythmic Monkey", preserving an art form rare in these modern times of digital art.
His motto was "Fun is Important!"
A Celebration of Life will be held later this year to honor Woody's vibrant life and enduring legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations to help with burial expenses can be made to his wife, Sandy Austin.
The arrangements for Woody are being handled by Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, Indiana.
Woody's life was a testament to the joy and beauty that creativity can bring into the world. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
