We just got back from a week at the Main Street Now Conference in Tulsa. A week spent with people from all over the country who care deeply about places like ours… about small businesses, about downtowns, about community.
And then I came home and saw the news that Painted Tree boutique closed all 60 locations overnight.
No warning.
No chance to prepare.
Just… gone.
And with them, thousands of small business owners lost income they were counting on. Some may never even see the money from their last month of sales.
I keep thinking about those people. The ones who packed up their products, took a chance, and trusted that opportunity.
Spaces like Painted Tree gave so many small businesses a shot. And now, in an instant, that’s been taken away. That’s hard to sit with, because this isn’t just business to me.
Daniel and I have been in Angola for 16 years. We took a chance on a building, on a downtown, on a belief that this place could grow into something special and it has.
We’ve seen so much change. So much growth. New energy, new ideas, new people bringing life into these streets.
But we’ve also seen how fragile it all can be.
We’ve watched businesses open with so much hope… and we’ve watched some quietly close.
We’ve seen others fight like hell to adapt, to stay relevant, to keep their doors open even when it would be easier to walk away.
That kind of resilience doesn’t make headlines. But it’s everywhere and right now, it’s being tested.
Because behind the scenes, small businesses are carrying a lot. Rising costs, unexpected challenges, things most people never see… all while trying to create spaces that people feel good walking into. It’s a lot.
But if there’s one thing I was reminded of this week, it’s this: communities that show up for each other… survive.
That’s what the Main Street Approach is really about. It's four pillars can be summed up as:
Economic Vitality
Choosing to spend local, knowing your dollars are helping someone stay open, keep going, keep believing in what they built.
Promotion
Talking about the places you love. Sharing them and their posts on social media. Bringing people in to the shop. Just help them be seen.
Design
Caring about how our downtown looks and feels… because it reflects all of us. Helping lend a hand when we do downtown clean ups or just pick up the trash that missed the can.
Organization
Help the people working behind the scenes to keep this all moving forward. Volunteer to be a part of Angola Main Street.
This isn’t just about shopping.
It’s about people.
It’s about stories.
It’s about whether downtowns like ours will continue to exist.
So if you’ve ever thought about stopping into a local shop, or grabbing that drink, or picking up that gift…
Now is a really good time.
Because those small moments of support?
They mean more than you probably realize.
And I promise… we feel every single one of them. 🖤
